wesaynothin
I've spent a good lot of time wandering around the ashlands (especially trying to find that farm for redoran quests) And I have never heard that sound! Are you sure your not just all schizophrenzic?
Vaa
I hear undead sheeps. It has to be underground or something, perhaps they have speakers in the MuckSpong's.
Baphomet
I'm running the "Caits Critters Unleashed" plug-in right now, and have been for a while now. It's kinda funny and I like it a lot. Lots of chickens (six different varieties, IIRC). Along with cows, pigs, sheep and goats. I am still investigating the alchemical properties of cow dung, chicken feathers, and wool however; and am desperately seeking a merchant that sells a decent BBQ sauce. I have not yet, however, experienced the mysterious "InvisiSheep of Vvardenfell"...
miltonic
I have Cates Critters, which is an interesting little mod. However I have not heard these undead phantom sheep in the game. It could be a hidden easter egg from the developer. If not, your theaory of advanced sheep evolution, adopting the ability to go 100% chameleon to avoid extinction by the hands of the Nords, appeals to me quite nicely. Perhaps there was a horrendous sheep atrocity that occured on the outskirts of Ald-Rhun, and you are hearing the unsettled ghost sheep, searching for a way to appease their death. Of course, the only way to appease their deaths is through the gruesome death of an unknowing traveler who has wandered into their grave site. If the traveler stops for too long, the invisible phantom sheep will surround the travler and rip his/her body to shreds, feasting on the bloody remains...Mwuhaha! (Sorry, just trying to add a little tension to this scenario)
Baphomet
...when the Nords invaded Resdayn, they slaughtered sheep in order to to wear their wool as armor ... The sheep, seeing their extinction almost inevitable if they didn't do something, quickly mastered the art of 100% Chameleon. To this day, they stay invisible not only for fear of the Nords, but also to observe Guar from a safe distance. This whole scenario will be fully explored in my forth coming plug-in... "Mystic Mutton of Vvardenfell" Coming soon...

Jetty
I heared bleeting for the first time in Ashlands while en route from Tel Vos to Urshilaku. IMHO Ashlands were rich farmlands with lots of sheep grazing around before Dagoth Ur turned them into dusty desert. And now there are only invisible ghosts of the long-dead animals wandering aimlesly between dead rocks and frightening sparse travellers with there voices. DreamOfTheRood
Well, I've got an explanation for you, but it's a bit more mundane than anything like underground farms or the ghosts of Nord invasions. If you've ever been underwater or had a slowdown due to being injured from jumping, you'll notice that the sound files slow down and create interesting effects. I've had my acrobatics skill go up while falling, and the normal sound went down a few musical steps due to the slowdown. My guess regarding the phantom sheep, which I've heard many times, is that it is actually the slowed-down form of a betty netch's call. Whenever I hear the phantom bleat, there is ALWAYS a betty netch close by. Although I've never tested it myself, I believe if you took the sound file and loaded it into a sound editor like CoolEdit or ProTools, you could slow the file down and make it sound like a sheep.Failing that, I'm siding with the 'Ghosts of the Nordic Invasion' response. After all, there are a billion ecological niches completely vacant in Morrowind, and the animals that had filled them must have disappeared somehow. Marxist ßastard
Dream, the phantom sheep is not a distorted version of an original sound, it is the original sound. Go into CS and look up the Ashlands regoion. In the panel that lists random environmental sounds, the sheep call can be heard just as it is in-game. The sound is listed as Howl 7, IIRC... Hmm... A howl. A wolf in sheep's clothing, perhaps?
tolkienniste33
Well DreamOfTheRood, that's interesting : at least it might give us an idea about how the devs created the betty netch's call : a speed-up version of sheep bleating :D Beside this, i'm siding with the 'Ghosts of the Nordic Invasion' answer ...
