...And now I cannot run mods

Recommended Posts

For whatever reason, Oblivion is now longer allowing me to run any mods. I can run Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine and that's about it. I can't say I've ever had this kind of trouble with mods before. What happens is, that whenever I go to start up Oblivion with or without OBSE, the game gets about as far as the words "Oblivion" before it simply shuts off and I'm left looking at Desktop; no error messages or anything.

Um... if it helps, I've only recently started playing Oblivion again after several months hiatus, and just downloaded Fearsome Magicka to try it out.

Any help is much appreciated.

First, uninstall all of your mods. Then install OBMM and wyre bash, if you haven't allready. You should have oblivion updated to the last version, also if you haven't already. Install all of the unoffivial patches, depending on which DLC's you use. After that, I'd recommend re-installing your mods one by one and see which one is causing the problem. If you already did everything listed above (execpt for the re-installing part), run your load order through BOSS.

I hope this helps, if not you should post your load order.

I don't think uninstalling the mods is a necessary step, at this point. I would definitely agree on the tools, especially Wrye Bash. And I would download and run BOSS before anything else. BOSS will probably find that you're running some mod without its master (that is, without another active that it depends upon), and tell you which ones they are. It's extremely useful, that way.

on first impulse

this "smells" like a windows7/vista UAC conspiracy problem

are you using Windows7 or vista

and did you install into the default directory.

If so - you are positively diagnosed.

Deactivate UAC or uninstall and reinstall to some other parent directory

one that does not have "prog" as any part of its tree name.

You might try deleting the Oblivion.ini and letting it create a new one - it will make a new ini if there is not one there when you start the game. It will not save it until you exit the game. This fixes quite a few strange problems.

Find the Oblivion.ini file here.

XP C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion

Vista & Win7 C:\Users\Your user name\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion

Well thats annoying.. I've just read this post, and now mines doing EXACTLY what it's doing to you. Thanks for the jinx.

Then again, I've just installed Kvatch Rebuilt, so I'll try disabling it for now to see if it makes a difference

Edit: After disabling the latest mod - I found my game to be in working order again. It'll be that you've got too many mods played if anything.

Kind Regards,

Jav.

Wow, wasn't really expecting this much advice; thanks.

Anyway, shortly after I posted this, I went back to the Fearsome Magicka mod page to check if there were mod requirements I had missed. Turns out there was, actually, and I can now run all my mods again. Still, out of curiosity, I'd like to know as to how this one mod was able to screw with the rest of my mods without actually being activated.

Again, thank you for your help. Sorry about the more or less false alarm though.

Sorry about the jinx, Jav.
