Ok so i was anxious to start enchanting, and i got Azura's Star at a low level, around 10. since then i have leveled up a little, and have tried catching Dremoras and Frost Atronachs in it. In Morrowind, Azura's Star could catch any soul, but whne i tried, i couldnt catch the Dremoras or Atronachs. is this because i got the Star at such a low level, or is it just not as powerful in Oblivion?

Are you doing this?

1. cast soul trap spell on opponent

2. kill opponent while soul trap spell is active

I don't have Azura's Star but it should work like other soul gems. I think Black Soul Gems are needed for some souls though.

Yeah, I think a black soul gem is needed. I tried soul trapping a Dremora at level 30 with Azura's Star, and the game said that I didn't have a big enough soul gem.

Azura's Star in Oblivion appears to be the equivalent of a Grand Soul Gem and not an ueber soul gem like it is in Morrowind. Quite useful as reusable soul gem but not more powerful. The one soul I've captured so far with a black soul gem left from the Mages Guild quests ended up being the same amount of enchantment as a grand soul (although form an npc instead of a normal monster) but I don't know that you can get a soul with more than 1600 enchantment. Until I find or create more dark soul gems my first character will continue to wonder.

I assume the other use you refer to for Azura's Star is one where any Daedric Artifact from a Daedric quest will serve as well. (Unfortunately Spell Breaker, although from a Daedric quest, doesn't appear to count to my chagrin. I ended up using the Mace of Molag Bal instead since my character doesn't use "Blunt" weapons.)

Okay, first of all, ignore the above statement. The Azura's Star is a soul gem in Oblivion. Now then, *Sorta SPOILER alert* you will have a chance to choose ANY one of the Daedric reward items, such as Azura's star, to destroy for a main-storyline quest.

But you cannot use Azura's star to Soultrap uniques or NPCs, and I believe that all dremora/daedra/etc fit under that category.
