Hey, was just wondering if i should have open cities in my large-ish mod, oh and if you do say no could you please comment telling me why its a bad idea? thank you muchly

Open Cities is a great mod. I've never had any issues with it, and I recommend it.

Some might think that the mod affects fps, but it really depends on what video options you have enabled, what mods are installed, and even then any loss in frames resulting from objects being loaded outside the city walls is negligible.

If we're talking about a new city here, that really depends on where the city is and what sort of options you will want for quests and other features. The advantage of having a city in a separate worldspace is that not only can you better control how things move between the two, but also have a handy condition which can be used to detect if things are inside or outside the city. Another advantage is that you have less chance of some spawned creature wandering their way (or following the player) into the city and slaughtering the whole town. This later point is especially important if you have extremely strong spawns and not-so-strong guards.

Too much lag. Oblivion will run better if you do not have an open city, both when the player is inside the city, and outside.

I beg to differ. Although there might be some performance loss in some cases (usually older hardware), any difference is actually rather negligible, atleast as it pertains to any of the vanilla cities. There will be quite a bit more performance loss if you have stuff happening both inside the walls of the city as well as outside, but this is usually just because of the game having more NPCs in the scene than it can really handle, and is not particularly related to hardware or visual lag.

All in all, it just really depends on what is right for your mod, and how badly you need to divide things for the sake of processing. Many people just don't like loaddoors.
