IndorilTheGreat
My sister's dog was killed today. She was trampled, and her neck was broken. She was not my dog personally, but I spent so much time with her that she practically was. I am starting this thread, in the hopes that people will look at their lives, and see what there is that they take for granted, and why they are thankful for it. You do not have to post it if you do not want to, but writing something down makes you realize it more fully. As for me, I take for granted that I have a roof over my head, and that I am recieving the proper necessities of life. I am extremely thankful for this, as it allows me to be safe, and wake up the next morning without having to worry about what I'll eat or where I will sleep the next night. R.I.P. Sayzles. We will always love you.

chaospearl
I'm so sorry to hear about the dog. (hugs) It bugs me when people don't think it's acceptable to grieve for an animal... a woman at work once took a sick day after her cat was killed and nearly got fired for it. If it'd been a great-aunt she hadn't seen in 20 years or had never even met, she would have gotten paid leave and a bouquet of calla lilies on her desk. Not that I'm saying pets are more than they are, but some compassion would have been nice. I sometimes wake up with nightmares about how I'm going to handle it when I lose my Yorkie. I'm physically disabled and she's with me all the time, 24\7; sleeps in my bed and all that. It's going to be like a parent or sib dying and I'm afraid I may not bounce back. Fortunately she's only five years old so that day is a long way off (insert prayer to whatever Deity(s) you care for). I know what you mean about being thankful, though. Sometimes it's the little things that make you stop and think, not just the biggies like food and shelter. My body is slowly falling apart due to my illness, and I lose a little more mobility every year. Two years ago in college it was nothing for me to pull my long hair back into a ponytail if it was windy outside. Now my shoulders and elbows are too stiff and painful to get my hands back behind my head anymore. I have to ask my mother to braid my damn hair for me. So yeah, I do a lot of thinking about things like that, and try not to take them for granted. Every time I get dressed I feel grateful for the fact that I can still balance my weight on one leg while pulling the other into my jeans, so I don't have to sit down to put my pants on. I wonder how many more years I have of being able to do that. I can still open a soda can. I can write with a pen\pencil, I can put my (multiple) earrings in. I can still WALK and bathe and dress myself (most days, anyway!). A lot of people can't. One day I may not be able to. So today is all good.
