as an operating system concept

folders do not change into file types

so you have a misconception

many of the folders you have mentioned

are not created when the game is installed

they are only created when you install mods that need them.

When Oblivion is first installed, there is no Meshes or Textures folders. They are not created until you add a mod that actually needs them. Adding them manually will not affect the game, and when you do install a mod that needs them it will use the ones already there or create new ones if they are not there.

The only Bethesda softworks files are the bsa - which stands for, Bethesda Softworks Archive files (These are not folders) and they are in a special compressed format that can be used by the game. They are supposed to be there. Here is a list of what is installed in the data folder when you install the game.

Music (folder)

Shaders (folder)

Video (folder)

Credits (text)

Oblivion - Meshes.bsa

Oblivion - Misc.bsa

Oblivion - Sounds.bsa

Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa

Oblivion - Voices1.bsa

Oblivion - voices2.bsa

Oblivion.esm

The custom meshes and textures always go in the textures and meshes folders - which will be automatically created when you install the mod.

Standard install (works for most mods, but not all) - unzip the mod directly into the data folder. If it has custom meshes or Textures, it will create the folder if needed. If it shows a message warning about overwriting always answer yes, it dos not overwrite anything, it appends to what is already there.

Better way - get OBMM, learn to install using OMODs

The reason that uninstalling had no effect is that the uninstaller provided in the game does NOT uninstall everything. It leaves the contents of the data folder unchanged. And that is where the meshes and textures are stored.

You do not have to uninstall to get rid of all meshes and textures. Instead do this:

Bben's Oblivion Revert to Vanilla game

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=340

If you feel you do need to completely uninstall, this procedure will remove everything - including all meshes textures, save games, mods, Oblivion.ini - EVERYTHING! It will make it as if Oblivion had never been installed - IF you follow the instructions exactly and in the order prescribed. Then reinstall properly with patches, OBSE

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
