Essentials won't turn unessential?

I use the CM Companions mod but there are a few companions that will not turn unessential. I know there is an existing file that makes them all unessential but I only want a few. I've tried to disable them and then renenable, but it always crashes the game. How do I set them permanently unessential?

Use the CS and open the CM mod in question scroll down the NPC list until you find your CM, the NPC should have a asterisk. Double click anywhere on that line which will open it. There is an essential box that is on the lower left hand side that is currently ticked, untick and save.

That's exactly what I'm doing, but when I get into my game they are still essential.

After opening the NPC box..and unticking essential.

OK, on the upper right their is a line reading Factions,Inventory,Spelllist,Animation,Face,Face Advanced...click on Face...then in that box click Apply and then Save..then save your changes on the upper tool bar. That should do it.

Will one of the modding gurus please help this young lady? I certainly have not. :pinch:

Everything you said is correct, the problem is if you meet an NPC and think " i know i will make them essential/unessential " then go ahead and make the changes in the CS, when you return to the game they are still as before.

For some reason the old value still sticks to them, i discoverd this when i tried to make Eyja ( Skingrad house maid ) essential and take her adventuring with me.

The only way i found around this was to make the changes before installing a mod/starting a new game.

You will need to deactivate the .esp you intend to change, dont deactivate the whole mod ( just untick the box next to it's .esp ), launch Oblivion and make a clean save game without them in it, then make the changes you want in the CS ( the .esp will still show up in the CS even though unticked ), save, then tick the box and launch Oblivion.

Now the changes you have made will be there, they are in a sence a new person.
