Ethre
I think the others here are quite right about the service - not a bad idea at all. The only potential problem I see is that you will be committed for a time period (8 years total - though most of that would probably not be active). I'd think it would probably be a good thing for you, but if you found that you really hated the service it could be an issue. If you are simply looking for something temporary to get up on your feet, you may want to consider Custom Harvesting. There's always a demand for help, requirements are minimal (if you have no experience, many will teach you what you need to know), and you get to travel the country. The downsides: can be long hours (especially if you don't like your crew) and it wont make you rich (on the other hand - if you are semi-frugal you can probably leave at the end of season with $10,000 cash in your pocket). Try Combine Forums or USCHI for more information. Or ask me if you wish. I've done the run myself and thoroughly enjoyed it (I'd still be doing it if it wasn't for college). fixed your link, led to a spyware redirect source intended for those who make mistakes when typing that kind of stuff. Those who clicked your wikipedia link should probably run a scan or two. Thanks for catching my typo Vagrant. -Ethre Edited October 23, 2010 by Ethre
Sinophile
I don't even have a girlfriend at the moment, so I am not worried about marriage. What scares me is having children. My father spent 15 years giving half his paycheck to a woman who didn't work, and who had a child with some other guy after he divorced him. Boot camp still scares the hell out of me, but so did going to college and being gainfully employed back before I moved out. I have been checking the state websites, and the post office website for job listings. For some reason, I have a good feeling about being a posman. Thank you all for your advice. Sinophile
For those of you still following this topic. I am still unemployed. The person I am living with is moving back to Iowa, a place I prefer not to live. So, I have until the end of the month to find a job or join the military. My dream of working for the post office have been crushed, as most of them require me to physically show up for drug tests, driving tests, etc. Still, I keep applying for jobs in Iowa, Colorado, and California( All places I have family). shadowmadnezz
If I was you.. Id call a military recruiter. You brought it up, so you obviously thought bout being in the service. Don't worry about all that physical demand stuff. they will break you down, and build you up in Basic Training so don't sweat it.
