Treasure Hunt

Alright, I'm making a mod that adds a treasure hunt (starting with a clue found in Vahtacen), and the very first puzzle you have to figure out is a cipher, and I want to know if it is too hard (or to easy, or just not hard etc.).

I don't think I would spend my time decrypting text in Oblivion. It would have to be very little to decrypt before it got tedious. Like a code to enter a door would be fine but entire directions would cause me to cheat and move on. I M O

I'm sure smarter ppl could zip through it easy.

It all comes down to: a) do you want a lot of people to enjoy your mod, or b) do you only want the really smart people to like it... no body got rich selling chess and stratego boards for a living... the real money is in ouija my friend!!

P.S. you might want to try to avoid 1 or 2 letter words in your sample, there aren't very many... so they can rat you out if you are using a simple replacement scheme. maybe ofset by the number of characters in each word -1 so " A" = a but "As" = Bt.

 

P.P.S. an optional side quest for the key may be an equitable fix. btw: 1,1,2,2,1,1,....very nice still cranking the pattern just for fun... but how many others will is really my point.

Possibly have progressive clues as to the solution of the cipher. You have the original cipher. now a clue somewhere else - not too easy to find, as to a single word in the cipher. If they can't get it from that, a third clue to the meaning of the cipher. If they still don't get it - well, maybe they should go back to simple hack and slash mods.

 

No matter how simple you make it there will be people who whine that it is too hard, and demand a cheat or walk through.

 

No matter how difficult you think you made it there will be those who figure it out right away and whine because you made it too easy.

 

As long as you are getting both of these responses it is probably about right.

 

Don't expect to please everyone, you will end up pleasing no one.

 

And the jerk who insists on showing off who immediately posts the solution without bothering to hide it as a cheat.
