Oblivion White Menus then Crash.

I have a unique problem. Oblivions turn completely white, like the texture was forgotten, then the game crashes. This problem happens to Vanilla Oblivion. It doesn't matter if I uninstall the whole game and all my mods, then reinstall without mods, it just doesn't work. This problem has happened on three different Windows XP installs, 1 Vista and one Windows 7. They are clean installs each time. I even bought a second copy, thinking my was defective. It even has happened on the different PCs.

First PC

AMD Athlon 4200+

2GB DDR-400

eVGA nVidia GeForce 7900GT 256MB

Windows XP SP2 (And on later reinstalls SP3)

Second PC

AMD Athlon 5200+

3GB DDR2-800

eVGA nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1GB

Windows XP SP3 then formated HDD and installed Vista SP1 (and SP2 Later)

Third PC (Current)

AMD Phenom II 550BE

3GB DDR2-800 (same RAM)

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850X2 2GB

Windows 7

Every time I install a new OS, I format the drive.

That is a strange one. And I don't think I've seen it before.

You say vanilla, no mods. How about patches?

Utility programs such as OBMM, OBSE ?

What version of Oblivion?

Are you installing in the default location or a custom location?

Have you disabled or shut down all other programs and background processes?

You should be two-stepping all over this game. Like bben said, are you installing it somewhere weird? Moving things that shouldn't be moved?

Anything odd about your files paths, especially your My Documents folder?

Um... maybe your location's off? Under Control Panel>Clock, Language and Region>Regional and Language Options under the locations tab, is it set to United States?

I mean, whatever's the issue, it's probably something you yourself has done across every computer. System specs alone won't help us. You're gonna have to really think about what unique "tweaks" you may have done to each one.

Good luck.

No extra utilities like OBMM or OBSE. I have installed both default and none default locations. I have run the game with zero "tweaks". We are talking as Vanilla as it gets. No special windows tweaks or anything I can think of. But if I uninstall and do a system restore the game will run normally for a little while. I think the problem seems to be related to multiple installs and uninstalls. I can't think of why though. If I turn music off in the ini file it seems to correct this problem, but I really like the music.

I would like to point out, that before this problem shows up on my system I do run a lot of mods. Including Better Cities Complete, QT3 Full 1.3, Bomrats Shivering Isles Pack, RAEVWD, and SI edition. FCOM full, complete Unique Landscapes, and way more. But even if I uninstall everything, so its completely vanilla this problem persists.

meaning unmodded the game works properly

so you already know that your mods are k-rashing your system.

so uninstall them one by one, and remember to remove their texure and mesh folders!!! or they are not uninstalled

until the problem mysteriously vanishes.

If you read above, this problem happens with the vanilla version of the game, so even if I uninstall every mod + OBMM, Wrye Bash, etc... this still happens.

Uninstalling sometimes doesn't uninstall everything that a mod puts in. Especially those that are mesh or texture only and don't show up as an esp.

Have you tried Bben's Oblivion Revert to Vanilla game

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=340

It returns the data folder to the real vanilla state - No mods, no textures, no meshes. Nothing except what the game installs. It does leave you with the latest patch though - if it is installed. And it can be easily reversed.

The only things that it does not return to vanilla is the shaders folder, Video folder and music folder if you - or some mod have changed them. As for some reason, they are the only things that Beth did not put into a bsa file. However, not many mods change them. If you do have one that changes any of these folders, it may be a better idea to reinstall and make a backup copy of the NEW data folder before any changes.

Make a backup folder and COPY the data folder to it when you have one that works for future troubleshooting.

I'll try though I don't know how it will help. I usually uninstall Oblivion as well, then reinstall it. Thank you though.
