First off--thank you to nexus and all the mod makers for some amazing work that you give away for free, and are my inspiration to work on an AI project for this game I've had in mind for awhile.

 

So with that:

 

I'm trying to create new AI that can take character traits into account when NPCs are making decisions in combat or trade, etc. However, there is virtually no place I can find through the webs that tells me how I can get under the hood and start understanding the code, including current mods. Any suggestions or leads would be immensely helpful. Thank you.

Okay. First you'll want to start with this tutorial from the CK Wiki.

Then take a look at these 4 tutorials, though they're not part of a series, they should help get you started:
