elustran Posted April 29, 2010 Share Posted April 29, 2010 Update 3 Still experiencing problems - I tried a clean install and started a vanilla game with no modifications - default .ini, all DLCs, and GFWL activated. Note that the game has previously functioned fine in this configuration on the same computer (excepting bad RAM, which I have replaced with something of identical performance) *any* ideas? Update 2 Still having serious game crashes. Tried playing for the first time since installing good RAM and I crashed several times in Red's Clinic in Big Town. I had two crashes on loading a save game from inside, a crash in middle of the basement, and a crash while entering the building from the outside. Update: I ran memtest and appear to have bad RAM. It's probably the major source of freezing. Also, some of the CTD is apparently due to fast-travel difficulties to the new map locations along the Potomac inserted in FOOK 1.1. This is a known error and currently getting fixed by the FOOK team. However, I am still experiencing slowness. Any help with that would still be appreciated. Brief: I've largely been able to get crashing down to an acceptable level, but I still can't fast-travel to certain map locations, particularly new ones like the Mirelurk Hunter Camp or the raider camp under the bridge north of the Citadel. Most such crashes have been to the desktop, rather than freezes. Furthermore, I've been experiencing slowness that I didn't have when I played vanilla Fallout 3, particularly outside when large objects in the distance are loading, such as the Citadel. Since I didn't really have problems before, even with graphics maxed out. I'm wondering if this is related to FOOK and possibly the extra clutter added. I'm running XP (I'm still too cheap to shell out for win7 and don't want to mess with a new install), have tried experimenting with some of the .ini tweaks presented in Tweakguides.com, I've used a Live dis-abler, I'm using FOSE, and I've recently run FO3MasterUpdate. I am up for any suggestions More Details: I believe some of the crashes are related to my hardware, drivers, etc since I've been having issues elsewhere - my girlfriend reported a crash during Sims 3 and some videos have occasionally frozen, requiring a reboot. I haven't experienced any crashing in other games. I've already checked temperature levels, cleared dust, and wiped/reinstalled my drivers. Notably, I was experiencing freezing where I couldn't exit FO3 without blindly operating taskmanager - it usually occured when autosaving after entering rooms, waiting, or fast traveling. Audio did not freeze. I have disabled autosaving, which I think helped, but I have not tried re-enabling autosave yet to see if FO3MU fixed the problem. Also, it would seem I'm still experiencing random freezes in FO3, not just crashes to the desktop. However, it doesn't explain the slowness. Any help would still be appreciated. I thought I'd add that I see error messages from Fallout3.exe in my Windows event viewer. I haven't been able to dig up much, but it seems like the error code is very generic and my last few crashes didn't seem to log an error in the event viewer. I should note that I am running Fallout 3 by launching via FOSE. If I start getting other serious errors in my system, I might consider finally getting Win7. The error in my RAM occurred at an address around 977.4 megs. I'm not intimately familiar with the way RAM gets allocated - is data filled up from the bottom up, or are addresses selected in a more scattered fashion? My thought as to why I wasn't experiencing much in the way of regular system errors, but experiencing crashes in Fallout is because my computer only uses less than 500 megs in normal usage, but Fallout sucks up at least an extra gig, so the flawed bit in memory would only be accessed when a memory-intensive application like Fallout was in use. Also, I was wondering if some of my disk errors were due to my flawed memory - is it possible that data copied to RAM and back to disk could have introduced addressing errors on my disk? Win 7 won't solve your problems (but an unavoidable thing long term). I had more trouble getting FO3 running properly (not freezing) than I had with my XP machine (mere black screen crashes). I don't know if the 'flawed bit' would not get used just because the whole stick is not being used in that micro second. Very possible, I would think. Crap in = crap out. (or is that crap out = ?). If the RAM showing errors it needs to go. You may be able to RMA the RAM . Several brands have lifetime warranty. I don't think using the Live disabler with FOSE is a good idea. Read the Read Me for FOSE. I am using neither, but did read something in the FOSE Read Me in relation to it turning off Live, Two things trying to do the same may cause a problem. elustran Posted May 1, 2010 Author Share Posted May 1, 2010 Thanks for mentioning the FOSE and Live disabler conflict potential, but I tried re-enabling live via the live disabler and still had a CTD in the middle of fast travel to Megaton before the loading screen had a chance to come up. I'm using doubly-confirmed good RAM currently. Most of my recent crashes haven't been freezes, though, so that's an improvement and could mean that bad RAM was causing some of my problems.
