Why bother with a Horse in Oblivion??

So I finally bought a horse in Oblivion. And boy what a disappointment! The controls are so horrible that I am just letting him graze in the stables and is merely eye candy.

Anyone recommend any mods that improve rider control?

big difference! Not sure what other kind of mods help with controls..

I use a couple of summonable horses, one from Ancient Towers, faster than Shadowmere, saddle bags with storage...looks cool! other from Coldstone Town i think... :ermm:

I cant remember the last time i bought a vanilla horse

I also hate that every single thing has a deep rooted grudge against your horse and must kill it at all costs. I know that there is a mod that deals with this, just can't find it. Although, I'd rather my horse get mauled by three minotaur lords than me.

I use a saddlebag mod and early on it really helps dragging loot out of dungeons if you're not that strong and don't have a lot of strength or feather enchantments. Carry loot out in a few trips to your horse, ride to town, carry loot to market in a few more trips. Also, I carry extra armors, potions, and weapons in my saddlebags so I'm not weighted down with the stuff while exploring or fighting. It becomes a bit less necessary later on when my character is faster and stronger.

Here is a mod that makes it so much easier to use a horse

Steer Horses with Mouse: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9460

For many more horse mods try the mod Categories for horses. There are mods that make the horses essential - they can be knocked out, but not killed, some that make them fight better, some that make them harder to kill or make enemies ignore them.

I use horses mostly for RP value, but there are times when they can be very handy. In my game I use the vanilla unicorn as my horse -- I just used the console to set its dispo toward me very high so it doesn't attack me when I draw a weapon. Other than that it didn't need any tweaking. I also have a mod that adds a horse whistle -- you choose a horse, and then you can use the whistle to summon it from anywhere in Tamriel no matter where you are or where it is. Generally, my character doesn't see the unicorn much; she doesn't consider it "hers" ... it's a wild creature that has chosen to help her on occasion when she needs it most, and she won't abuse that relationship. Most times I only whistle for it when I've just crawled out of a cave beat to hell with my armor in tatters and loaded down with loot, and I just don't have the strength to make it to town without either stopping to repair my kit first (which will take time, due to mods) and if I don't get done before nightfall the world is a lot more dangerous not to mention freaking hard to tell where I am and where I'm going (again, mods). At those times it's VERY useful that I can whistle and the unicorn will show up. I can either scramble onto its back and make it to town before dark, outrunning anything that would require armor, or I can set up camp right outside the cave and sleep til morning with the unicorn standing guard, as its dispo towards anything besides me is still low and it will attack, and it's more than a match for the local wildlife.

I'd never use or need a horse in the vanilla game, that's for sure, which is kind of sad. Horses are for times when I'm too burdened down to move fast on my own, and have an urgent need to do so -- conditions which would never occur without the use of various immersion mods.

I haven't played Oblivion for a long time but i never did use them full time. I would get one thinking it was a good idea, or i would get a horse related mod and use one for a while (like a summoning mod) but eventually my character got to where he would run so fast that i didn't bother anymore. I also got sick of getting on and off my horse to fight, things attacking my horse, my horse attacking everything else while i'm trying to be stealthy etc etc. I've been playing a lot of FO3 and the horse is like having a companion on FO3...they just get in the way a lot.
