Danganronpa: New Vegas

I wonder how many people in this community are familiar with Danganronpa (Wikipedia, Wikia, TV Tropes). For those who are unfamiliar with it, here's a synopsis, as featured on the main page of the Wikia:

The story takes place at Hope's Peak Academy, an illustrious private school that only accepts "super" students: the best of the best of the best. The criteria extends to any niche, so in addition to super-geniuses and super-athletes, they take super-idols, gang leaders, and geeks. Makoto Naegi, the protagonist, is still baffled as to how he got in, as his only outstanding trait seems to be his super "good" luck - and that's only because he was randomly chosen to be accepted by the school. In fact, he hasn't even started his first day of school when he suddenly loses consciousness and wakes up in a creepy alternate version of the academy.

It's soon revealed that Naegi and fourteen other new students have all been abducted by a sadistic teddy bear named Monokuma, who refuses to let them leave. The only way out of the locked-down dark school is to graduate...by killing another student. Once a murder is committed, Monokuma holds a trial so that the class can try to figure out which one of them is the culprit, culminating in a vote. If they make the right choice, the murderer will be messily executed. Make the wrong choice, and not only does the murderer escape, but the rest of them will take the punishment in their place...

The reason why I'm so interested in seeing Danganronpa adapted to NV is this gem I found on the WMG page for it on TV Tropes:

The school was built by Fallout's Vault-Tec

In an alternate universe where the end of the world was brought about by something similar to Vault 106's psychoactive drugs rather than nuclear weapons. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the end times by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters known as Vaults. The Hope's Peak Academy Vault was to incorporate elements of Vault 11 (sacrificing others by vote), Vault 29 (no parents), and a Battle Royale-style set up. When the original administrator (the principal) refused to cooperate with the plan, he was replaced with [REDACTED] who carried out the experiment on behalf of Vault-Tec. The people actually watching the experiment aren't outsiders, but rather Vault-Tec employees monitoring the experiment.

The way I see it, a Danganronpa-style plot line would be very lore-friendly if interpreted as a Vault-Tec experiment that went off the rails, then was rediscovered by an outside party (NCR Office of Science and Industry? Followers of the Apocalypse? Enclave remnants?) that wanted to replicate it. Long story short, Hope's Peak Academy is now open for enrollment once again, and the Courier's one of the lucky "students" chosen to attend.

I'd imagine the general structure as being a lot like Dead Money: You're trapped, and all you have are the clothes on your back (of course you'll get the rest of your gear back eventually), your wits, and whatever you can pick up as you try to avoid getting murdered by your classmates. Who can you trust? Who can you save? How will you get out? Can you figure out who the mastermind is?

Apart from the general quest/adventure, there's a whole lot of other stuff that can go into a Danganronpa mod:

Clothes and Armor: The characters of Danganronpa (and its sequel, especially its sequel) collectively have a very eclectic fashion sense, and the Courier should get to wear some of those threads as well. Check out the image and sprite galleries to see the possibilities.

NPCs and Companions: Model-wise, I can see how this can cause problems, considering the very unorthodox builds and hairstyles of quite a few of the characters. How hard would it be to replicate, say, Mondo Owada's two-tone pompadour or Yasuhiro Hagakure's frizzy dreadlocks (or even better, Ibuki Mioda's horn hair)? Hell, how hard would it be to make an honest-to-God Monokuma in NV? Audio might also be an issue. There are a lot of fandubs on YouTube, though, so I suppose anyone who's interested in working on this project may seek out the people who worked on those fandubs for assistance. Once all those hurdles are out of the way, though, I don't think it'd be too much to ask for surviving students to be made into full-fledged companions once the questline ends; depending on the choices you make, you may very well end up leading a small army once you leave Hope's Peak if you're using an unlimited companion mod.

All in all, I feel that a Danganronpa adaptation would be a worthy addition to the Mojave Wasteland. Who'd be willing to help make this a reality?

Ok. I read this in a e-mail notification. I thought when I got to my rig I would reply.

Now I would say that doing a direct crossover is a bad idea. However the idea of you getting stuck in a situation that you need to do Danganronpa-style investigating is appealing.

Now I wouldn't go as far as making an exact copy of either of the Danganronpa casts. How about a more "Fallout friendly" version.

The NCR (or other scientific group) finds a vault not on record. It is empty and in fairly good condition. They figure out that it was a facility that was to protect the smartest and brightest of the old world. They think there may be many scientific secrets hidden in the server. To unlock it they are sending you (and other prodigies) to try to figure it out. you (the lucky survivor, or the natural leader), some scientist prodigy, etc... Then you wake up in the facility with no memory of arriving.

Now I am not saying that you couldn't do Easter eggs and odes to the original idea. Hidden outfits based on the show, Text references, commentary references, etc... I also would say that having the eccentric and crazy personalities is a good idea. Just make sure they fit fallout. don't just copy and past personalities.

Note: What was funny about this is that I was listening to 'Zetsubousei: Hero Chiryouyaku' when I got the e-mail notification.

After sitting on it for a couple days... yeah, a direct port of the Danganronpa casts would be a terrible idea in practice. The NPCs and companions could still be based on the original characters in broad strokes, though. Wouldn't take too much effort to have Byakuya and Kiyotaka expies as the officers in charge of the expedition and a Chihiro expy as the aforementioned scientific prodigy, for instance.

I could certainly roll with costumes based on the series hidden somewhere in that vault. As you figure out the mystery of what happened to the original inhabitants, you find some of their personal belongings. Apart from clothes, there could even be a few weapons (a gold-plated katana, a well-worn combat knife, a peculiar pair of scissors).

All I know is, there could be a lot of fun to be had with writing terminal entries and recording audio logs.
