hi , im totally new to oblivion, well i bought gothic2 some weeks ago but never advanced in the game hehe, lack of time, and now with gothic 3 coming soon i rather play oblivion and wait for gothic 3 (or does gothic 3 doesnt release soon?).

well in such a huge game i somehow always feel lost, just want to know your opinions about how other new players begin this game.

do you first do storyline only and ignore random discovered dungeons until you become stronger?

or do you go into every random discovered dungeon and take every mission you can get right immediatly to become more strong quickly.

do you care about stats and are you trying to raise stats quickly

i somehow dont want to quickly become a "hero" and get levelups fast and master skills etc, i just want to walk around and do something here and there and by this slowly become better.

do you think with ignoring "skill leveling", " optional tasks/Missions" i will havea more hard time playing the game or is it totally ok to slowly discovering the world and not to accept all missions immediatly and not to go into all randomly discovered dungeons immediatly ?

dont now how to tell exactly whats my point but you know its kind of an attiotude, i dont want to think in numbers and improve my character in big steps .

but for example if i join a guild there is so much good equipment placed everywhere and no theft penalty anymore after joining! so doesnt it disturb balancing iof i dont fight big monsters soon because i rather want to explore the world SLOWLY but if i find high end weapons (or mid level weapons) so early in the game for free , so that nothing will be a chanelenge to me later until i proceed in char development?

Remember that the world is scaled to your level. That means that you will never find a daedric longsword from level 5-6. Also it does not make much of a difference what level you are in the main quest. Howver remember that the game is completely OPEN!. This means you don't have to complete the main quest and even if you complete it it will still alow you to keep on playing. S n the order you take quests does not realy matter. On the other hand the side quests will "force you" to explore the world. I myself have discovered like 60-70 places on the map and actually entered less than half. And I'm level 33! Master in 6 skills and leader of arena mages guild ad fighters guild. I would suggest you take your time leveling up, do not forget minor skills, and do some quests. They will give you a reason to exist. Besides they will guide you to all the world. Plus you don't have to do all the quests in a place in one go. You can return anytime as many times as you want. Te world is completely open.

The main quest is a good way to get aquainted with the world, it will send you everywhere. As long as you dont fast-travel all the time, you will find plenty of dungeons between main quests and little side quests dotted everywhere. Just remember that the game gets more difficult as you progress, so if you level up too much, that first main quest may turn into a very long, and difficult affair. I recomend getting started on the main between levels 3 and 5. By then you should have some good gear, know your character a little and the enemies you will be facing will be interesting enough to keep your attention.

If you are exploring the world it is a good idea not to level up too fast. One way is to keep the skills you use most, usually a weapon type and armour type and/or an offensive magic plus plus in the minor skills. Although minor skills level slowly there are enough places to see and quests to do (outside the main quest) to let you get them all to at least journeyman level without much levelling at all. If you aim to be expert in your fighting/magic attack skill and armour when you start levelling seriously it will help. I also recommend making a lot of potions. As master alchemist you can make a potion from one ingredient. Thus you can have restore health and damage health (to poison swords and arrows) easily available.

My current (and probably last) character is level 7 atm and is exploring the countryside without too much difficulty. I have done all but three city based misc quests, have a few left in most guilds and all in the Dark Brotherhood still to do, most of the rural miscellaneous quests remain as do daedric quests and master trainer quests. I have purchased and fully furnished all 8 available homes. Money is not a problem for alchemists!

I've been playing quite a bit. I hit level 43 last night. I've beaten the main quest, all the daedric quests, mages quest, arena champ and about half way through the dark brotherhood quests.

I still feel like there's so much more ahead. The entire east half of cyrodill is unexplored except for a few caves, aleid ruins and daedric shrine's I've visited for quest completion purposes. I really haven't done any plain old running around yet. The amount of exploring you have to do for the quests alone is staggering.

One tip. Don't fast travel a lot. You really lose out on the experience of exploring the world.

I haven't played the previous TES games so when I first started playing Oblivion I didn't understand what the game was about. I pretty much followed the main quest and was probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through it before I really started understanding that the game wasn't about just completing the MQ and that there was a whole lot more out there.

With my second character (my "main" char), I chose not to do the MQ since I had completed it with my first one. Instead, I've completed all of the guild quests and also became the Arena Grand Champion. I've also done a lot more exploring although I usually don't enter caves since they all pretty much look the same. I still have most of the Daedric quests to do since they are level based and I'm only level 19 now. I may or may not do the MQ with this char.

I also created a third character specifically for doing a speed run through the MQ (this was after I had over 100 hours of game time between my first characters so I was familiar with Cyrodiil). I was able to complete the MQ with a game time of 4:23. However, I did have to cheat and "advlevel" to level 2 in order to do the Azura's Star quest. I haven't played this character since nor have I collected the Imperial Armor.

Anyway, that's how I've progressed through the world of Cyrodiil.
