Frustrated Shopper

Is this a shortcoming of the game or do you need to teach me how to shop correctly?

I needed some light for a dungeon. I went to the Outfitter in Balmora. He had three torches and I wanted more. I bought three anyway and left. Then I decided to go back again about 8 hours later. He had three more, so I bought them and almost left again. Then I decided to turn around and start another bartering session. There were three torches there again. So I guess if you need more of an item than there appears to be available, you just end the bartering session and then start a new session again and again until you are sated. This seems to be wrong. I can understand that there may not be enough of something due to supply problems, but if there really are enough I should be able to buy all that I want in one session. Heck, he should just reach under the counter and bring out more!!!

So, what am I missing here???

As a sidelight (pun intended), is there a better way to illuminate a dungeon than these torches that burn out so quickly?? [i suppose I will find a spell at some point, but a nice magic lantern (normal lanterns don't last much longer than a torch!) or sword of light would be better.]

There are certain items marked in the game to have an "infinite number." These items are presumed to be in infinite supply to an NPC in groups of a certain number until the container that they are in is examined by an NPC.

For example, your torch situation. Assuming that the torches are in a sack directly in front of the NPC that sells them, the NPC will sell torches in groups of three until you open the sack in front of him. If you steal the torches from the sack, the NPC will not sell you torches.

If the torches are carried by the NPC, they will be in infinite supply until you attempt to pickpocket the NPC.

Items that are not marked as being in infinite supply (items that are given positive quantities in CS) respawn every month.

If you want a better light and you have Bloodmoon, go north of Skaal Village and follow the coast towards Karstaag. You should see a Nord shipwreck with a unique Travel Lantern hanging on the mast.

even better, golden saint + extravagant ring + a fair amount of gold = 100 light in 50 ft

alternatively u cud just do what i do, press ESC to bring up the menu, go to options, click the video tab, then turn the gamma up. hey presto! one lit dungeon :P

What makes this light spell so great? I always just use night eye nice effect for me and i'm sure it wont do anything for NPC's hehehehe. As for your torch situation like Marxist male without a father said some items are infinite with shop keepers if you want to buy them in bigger quantity buy them then sell them back to the shop keeper he will now sell the amount he had plus what you sold him and the amount will not go down i've done this with plenty of shop keepers i got the guy in sadrith mora letting me buy up to 500 bloat and ash yam at once.

If you have to use magic, use Night-Eye -- there's no area limit, and the spell is applied globally to the environment, which means that your charachter, certain objects, and landscape texture boundaries will also appear brighter.

A good enchantment idea is an Amulet of the Beggar's Eye -- A Cast on use Exquisite Amulet with twenty points Night Eye for thirty seconds, twelve points Restore Health for two seconds (filler), and sixty points Detect key for thirty seconds, in that order. It's cheap, extremely useful, and won't require a heavy gem to use.
