Blender to Geck issues FONV (Please Help)

Ive been working on mods for awhile but it seems when i edit a mesh in blender and then export it, it doesn't recognize it im assuming. I put it in the right folders and everything i have followed several videos and followed the exact instructions and i still am getting errors. I dont know what to do i severely need help and am completely at a loss!

I followed this video specifically and it still isnt working.

In the geck when i go to edit the static of the 9mm pistol (the gun i edited) a marker error pops up, as we all know it the infamous red exclamation point. I dont know what i am doing wrong and would really really appreciate it if someone could link me to a better tutorial or walk me through what they think the issue is. Again my pathways and file directories are correct, as i use the same ones for my other mods. I just dont understand why this isnt working. I have edited static before and had poor results as well. in previous attempts the geck wont even realize i have created a new weapon when i know exactly what i am doing and do it over and over.

Im pretty used to making weapons in blender, actually tryna figure out how to make armor - with no luck :l so I MAY be able to help you even though I have never had this issue myself. When making a weapon and exporting it, it is very important you have specific options chosen or it will not come out right, another thing that could be your problem is that you deleted or edited something you were no supposed to, like the collision box, the nodes for reloading, etc. OR you could have chosen not to export textures, but seeing as its a red exclamation doom satan mark - it must be something with the mesh. Try checking your options to make sure they are the same as his.

Hi, so as I wrote you in my PM, here is short summary:

1. I do whatever I need to do in Blender, GIMP (graphics), xNormal (normal maps - can be done also in Blender). Untill I am done, I do not touch Nifskope and GECK. But of course, you can probably do not have to use texture at all (it gives black model in-game if I recall it right from something years ago) or replace them with some very simple single colour .DDS picture. And of course, before I do this, I check original models from game to see, how to split my model into parts. What is static, what is animated etc.

  • (For i.e. classic rifle you can even split the body to stock and metal parts and make in in nif from 2 pieces, so you can put different shining to stock and to metal.)
  • And I don't use model from game to anything else, than reference so I NEVER try to fix parts to animation nodes etc. in Blender. This is job for Nifskope

2. When I am done with. No.1, implementation in game is coming. So, check the smoothing, normals orientation, probably even triangulation of the mesh (can be done i nifskope, but well - you don't have to keep that in mind later). Split the mesh in parts, name them.

  • Eventually orient tho whole mesh, so when you load it in Nifskope, it has same orientation like vanilla model (I think it is "top view" in Blender)
  • For this work, I use Blender 2.49, as more recent version refused to work with Nifskope (btw. it might have changel already, but I am tired to update and update my Blender, try to restore the workplace, colors etc. and learn new position of various functions I need)

Export it to nif. as a single model, don't make several .nifs for each part separately. It is not necessary, when your model is already parted properly.

I quite often use default setting for Fallout, despite I have somewhere some guide about some choices

3. I use this procedure, 1st type. So I use .nif, as going through .obj was never succesfull for me.

http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php?title=Basic_Guide:_From_Modeling_Program_to_the_GECK

I slowly replace parts. Adjust orientation and size. Start with i.e. weapon body, so you will find out the scaling factor for your model.

And when it says "use copy" not "copy branch" and use it on "nitristripsdata" and not "nitristrips" do it like that. Same with "paste over" - if you can't see this option, somethink is wrong, get back to copy part again.

Copy branch and paste branch are for duplicating part of the ready-to-geck mesh, not swapping parts with your models ones.

4. quick check is easy. Go to GECK, get your desired gun and save it under new name/code as a new (future) weapon. Now, go to nifskope and swap just one part - i.e. main body. Save the .nif file (under new name of course) and go back to GECK and load your new .nif for your new gun. And you will immediately see, whether is everything OK.

Notes:

  • it should otherwise work. If you follow that official tutorial, it is working. So export your .nif and do that one-piece swap described in STEP 4.
  • make a backup copies (not just one) during progress of work. It saves you from time-to-time.
  • when adjusting mesh for animation etc. NEVER moves animation nodes (NiNodes). They seem to move in .nif, but in game, it will revert back and everthing will be screwed up. If you need to move placement of your mesh part together with animation point, give me a call and I will describe you how I did it. It may not be the best way, as I found it myself as a desperate attempt, but it works - my Browning 1885 was done this way.

So try it, make report. Eventually you may upload your own Blender-exported .nif, original-game .nif you want to use for swapping and your modified .nif.

Good luck.

Youre so much help seriously i cant tell u how much i appreciate you doing this.

however i dont want to create new guns just yet i want to make small modifications to gun meshes or adding a scope and such first before i move on top making my own guns. For example iv been trying to make a snubnose 9mm pistol the exact one from FONV just a smaller barrel. When i make the barrel shorter it just doesnt turn out right in the geck but looks perfect in nifskope...thats what im not understanding
