Fallout 3 Save Game Reducer

Recommended Posts

My saved game is over 10 megs and CTD on save is becoming more of a problem.

Digging around in the save game file (using wordpad) revealed that the file contains complete crap like the text of Three Dogs radio monologue (why save that, he'll say the same thing 100,000,000 times anyway).

Is there any utility or technique to reduce the saved game file size?

At this point every time I load I have to go into third person, go to console type 'kill' click myself, die, respawn then save to prevent automatic crash from any save.

I don't use autosaves or fast saves at all and must have entered console to save about a thousand times now.

I get a CTD about ten saves in, as a rough guestimate. Probably every half a meg the file increases.

I'm tempted to load at Vault 101 (a one meg file), level up with console, give myself all my perks, and abilities and move on from that point.

The "kill yourself" technique or the so-called "crash fix guide" are just workarounds for what fo3edit master update fixes for good.

Run fo3edit master update to fix your crash on save problems.

Your large save files are another issue, the worst thing they will cause is long load times for the most part.

I have the same issue, large save files, and it's boring to wait 10~15 minutes to load my save file.

crashes sometimes happens, but the biggest problem is the big loading time....

I have searched for a solution to this since a long time ago, and I found the "wrye bash" that contains a feature to reduce the savegame size, but it's for Oblivion, and the version to FO3 "gary bash" doesnt contain this feature...

Is it impossible to reduce the savegame size for FO3?

sorry for my english...

thanks everyone

10-15 minutes? Please. It doesn't take that long to load a save even of that size. You really need to cut back on the sugar, caffeine, or whatever drug it is that makes you perceive time in such a distorted fashion. Talia's saves are upwards of 12MB, and still load in roughly a minute. She doesn't crash on load or save, either. (other times, not so much)

Anyway, saves inevitably trend upward in size. There's no getting around that. You can try removing some mods, particularly things that affect the world in general like MMM or RTS, but it won't reduce your save size by very much and you may well find your saves have gained back any "lost weight" from reduced mods fairly soon after.

Yes, the loading time of my savegame is about 10~15 minutes... I have another savegame with 8 mb and the loading time of this is less than 10 seconds... so, I tried your solutions, but none works....

Is there another solution(s)???

Sorry for my english...

thanks

I still don't believe even a 10 minute load time much less 15. But, if I had a save taking even 5 minutes to load I'd start going back to previous saves until I found one that didn't take that long to load, then just delete all the bad ones as not being worth the trouble.
