Creating icons for items

like i recolor my armor and i want the icon to look the same, i have adobe photoshop and it can save as dds but when i open it in toolset, either there's no picture or it crashes. can someone tell me what option under dds does it need to be

and what size etc

I've never used the photoshop plugin but based on the requirements when using the command line tools, try the "8.8.8.8 ARGB" type and set mipmap generation to "No MIP maps".

I don't mod DA but if it is similar to Oblivion (same engine?), then you might need to use DXT3 with no MipMaps. DXT3 because you will use the alpha layer to mask the icon so it does not show a square...just the image if you mask it correctly.

 

Here are some icon creation tutorials for Oblivion...even though they are for different image editors, each can provide insight into how to do it best. Read them all and see what works best for you (I created the tutorial for PaintShop Pro)

Would be nice to know if this works the same for DA.

Item/inventory icons are 58x58 and they all have a 100% transparent pixel in each corner. The icon for a mod in the DLC screen is 128x128. I don't know about spell/ability icons.
