There are plenty of bogus (pirate) disk versions for sale. The only ligit disk versions REQUIRE you to register your game through Steam, It's FREE, - No charge to sign up on steam, and no charge to register a ligit version purchased somewhere else. And you get all of the updates ( but not the DLCs) free as well.
