ctd when /a yao guai spots me/ entering cells west of arefu

I have a save just outside of arefu and i want to travel north west but everytime i do the game crashes. One time i saw a yao guai who didn't seem to have an animation going but was still moving. When i attacked it the game crashed.

so yeah what could be crashing my game?

so i'm pretty sure it's just a problem with yao guai, cause i've managed to run for 20 minutes through the wasteland and end up at shady sands, which is just south of oasis

 

in that time i've fought scorpions, mirelurks, dogs and molerats, but i havn't come across a yao guai.
