CTD Shivering Isles - Cylarne

Recommended Posts

I've recently restarted playing oblivion and have completed the main vanilla quest, all the side quests, and KotN (plus some of the downloaded content). I've moved onto Shivering Isles to get everything done there as well, and my game has been running smoothly with no problems at all.. until Cylarne. I reached the Flame of Agnon quest, and my game crashes when saving anywhere near or inside of Cylarne. I tried testing creating new save games before actually leaving the palace for Cylarne, and I'm able to save just fine. Once I'm out in the world close to or in Cylarne, though, any attempt to save causes a CTD, and the save usually ends up being corrupt. I've tried isolating mods to see if any could possibly be causing this but nothing. I've got the most recent version of the vanilla game and plugins and the latest version of all the mods that I use. I also use OBSE, OBMM, and COBL. Here's my load order:

Also have some other texture recolors, like for the vanilla and SI maps, foods, jewelry, natural faces, quarl's texture pack redimized and reduced, etc. Most of my mods are just sound/visual improvements, so I don't really understand where the conflict is coming in considering the whole of the vanilla game and a good chunk of SI was working without any issues at all up until this point. My game time right now is only about 83 hours, can't remember the exact time at the moment. I also use OBSE -Elys- Universal Silent Voice v0.93 and Oblivion Stutter Remover, almost forgot about those.

I also attempted to do the Flame of Agnon completely and then try saving once I was back in the city (after having lit the dementia side), and the game still crashed when I attempted to save. And I tried moving my cobl esps around, but that didn't help either. Bleh.

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm running Vista but have all of my Oblivion-related executables running with xp compatibility (couldn't play any other way). Also, tried playing with my load order a bit more and even disabled all of the mods (except the other DLC ones, like vile lair and whatnot), but nothing mattered. Even tried moving SI and its patch down to the bottom, and that made no difference. Also tried walking from Bliss all the way to Cylarne instead of fast-traveling, and attempting to save still causes the game to crash. I don't get it. =/

New development! Hoping that maybe someone would reply here, I decided to load up a previous save and fool around with some other mods that I hadn't tried yet. I was happily finishing up Kvatch Rebuilt, saving afterward like I do after all mods before started a new one, and the first save did just fine. Then I tried to make a second save (I always do 2 just in case), and the game crashed. Reopened Oblivion, tried to load that save, and it was corrupted. Loaded the first one that worked, tried to make the second save again, and it crashed. Oh, and guess at what time it was? Round about 85-86 hours, which is pretty much exactly what happened while I was trying to quest in Cylarne. So it's a problem with my game play time, not the place. =/ I'd heard about something called the abomb glitch but thought it only happened after like 200 hours of play time or something. Could it be possible that this is what's wrong after only 86ish hours for me? Or might it be something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I hadn't noticed any animation bugs or anything, so... I don't know if that's actually the problem.

two possibilites

first one is remote, but needs to be cleared - is your game patched to 1.2.0416 (its the number that matters) if not, you have the formid bug . . . if it is 1.2.0416, its possibly the animation bug

Animation bug can be fixed with wrye bash, load the game save and select the animation bug option.

Yep, it's patched up. Like I said, though, I've not seen any animations have problems, so I wasn't sure if that could be the problem. I don't use Wrye Bash, though, and was hoping to avoid it because of how complicated it seems. Using OBMM and OBSE was a big step for me, haha, and I wanted to try to keep things simple.

Downloaded Wrye Bash and managed to get it installed and running correctly. (Side note- also decided to try out BOSS, used it, and now my load order makes no sense to me... but whatever, I guess it's "right" now). I have no clue what most of WB does, but I wanted to see if maybe the abomb option could fix my saves. I checked the original save from when I thought Cylarne was the problem, and WB says that the abomb progression on that save is only at 26%, so... it's nowhere near being 100% screwed up. Could this still be causing the crash-on-save somehow, though?

Did you try some of the other tools that Wrye Bash has for fixing and adjusting saves. You might try installing the Unnofficial Oblivion Patches for the DLC's,KOTN, and SI. Look in the logs some of your programs create for an idea as to what is causing this crash. Look in Documents\My Games\Oblivion and in your Oblivion folder itself. I hope you can sort out this issue.

I've got all of the unofficial patches for my DLCs and KotN/SI. It's all listed there in my load order, lol. I haven't had a chance to get to sit down and try to figure out Wrye Bash very much just yet, just looked at the abomb fix. There's so much going on with this program that it's a fair bit overwhelming. I was hoping someone maybe had an idea of what could be going wrong and, if WB had a fix or something, what I should be looking at. I've tried looking through various logs and things, but it all might as well be in Japanese.

I do feel stupid for not noticing the patches in your LO. Have you tried the remove bloating feature of Wrye Bash yet?

I haven't yet, though I did consider it. Like I said, I hadn't yet read much into the WB features. I suppose I'll have to try it, and I'll probably end up trying the abomb fix also, just to see if it makes any difference. Will keep this updated with any changes or progress, and maybe someone else will somehow magically be able to tell me exactly what's wrong. ;D Thanks for you guys' help thus far though.

I used repair abomb and remove bloat features of WB on my save game, and neither seems to have solved my problem (I made sure to make backups in case one of those features accidentally corrupted my save, but they worked fine). No matter where I am or what I'm doing, after a certain play time (around 85-86 hours in), any kind of saving (manual or autosave) causes my game to crash to desktop. I used to keep autosave on but turned it off when I originally encountered this problem thinking perhaps that had something to do with it, but turning autosave off makes no difference; trying to save manually still causes a CTD. Any other ideas? =/

Edit: Just out of curiosity, I downloaded the SI version of the 1.2.0416 patch to see if maybe installing it did something. My game already says 1.2.0416 in the bottom left of the main screen (I have the GOTY edition), but I figured I'd go ahead and try this anyway. When I try to use the patch I downloaded, I get the error "Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match." I'm assuming that means I already have and/or don't need this patch, but I just wanted to double-check it. I also want to note that this is my second time installing and playing on this computer (yes, I was sure to remove all traces of the previous installation before reinstalling), and the first time I played, I played for many many hours with no problem, not even the abomb. I only decided to reinstall 'cause I got the Bruma statue bug 'cause I changed races mid-game, and I wanted a fresh install using OBMM and OBSE and such. Ah, you live, you learn.
