yeldarb
Why did you reinstall? I can't understand why you are getting a crash when you start a new character. OBSE plus UAC causes instant ctd's. Mods not being installed for older saves usually only causes problems with saved games. Did you install any new mods on your current Oblivion that you did not have installed when you last played Oblivion. If you have Windows Vista or 7 installing any mods will cause problems if You installed Oblivion in C:Program Files\Bethedsa Softworks\Oblivion. You are better off installing Oblivion in C:Games\Oblivion. You can also try deleting the Oblivion.ini in Documents\My Games\Oblivion, the file is for configuration settings. You will have to reset your graphics options when You restart Oblivion again if you do this. EDIT 4:52 P.M. CST U.S. Did you remember to patch Oblivion to 1.20416? The patches are available for free from Betheda's website.

bben46
Sometimes reinstalling leaves entries in the Windows registry that cause problems. My procedure will remove those entries. Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexushttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240 It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice. Fonger
The game used to work fineyou seem to have exhausted all the possibilities. But the game still won't work. That leaves . . . 1 - you did everything correctly, but some single step that you thought you did, simply didn't happen. Either a brain failure or (more likely) UAC completely intervened. Solution - Once More Unto the BreachTurning off your machine between each and every step.re-uninstall againMake certain Its gone!!!! (this is another step)re-installMake certain it works AND has no modsEven if it doesn't work -- -- Triple check where the machine thinks Oblivion is-- Triple check that it has no mods (nothing reappearing from UAC) 2 - you installed a mod before you checked the game - knowing that it would work - but this single mod is causing the crashing so nothing else you do will show any benefit. yeldarb
Try turning the sound off completely. You know everything else is up to date and this is a known problem with Oblivion. Your drivers are up to date and the game is installed correctly and outside of Program Files. Edit the cofiguration settings in Documents\My Games to turn the sounds off change the 1 into a zero in bsoundenabled and bmusicenabled. I am sorry that I did not think of this until I read another post today.
