Very confusing and frustrating problem.

So one day my Oblivion starts up just fine until it gets to the menu screen - then it quickly CTDs. The thing is... It was running JUST FINE the day before without any changes! The only thing I can tell you is that I noticed that the music doesn't play during the small moment that the start menu DOES show up before it CTDs and that's my only clue as to what the problem could possibly BE.

 

I've BOSSed my load order and I've made sure to bash patch everything EXACTLY to how BOSS tells me to. I've made sure all my mods were up to date and gotten rid of the obsolete/incompatible ones. I'm using the MOBS version of francesco's mod and I'm using the MOBS version of the UOP supplemental patch (though one of them is the 326 version and the other is the 325 because I can't find the matching versions as the downloads for them have been discontinued apparently... could this be it?) Is there a common problem about this I'm overlooking?

 

I'm at the end of my rope here, everything I've tried has yielded the same result: the start menu pops up with no sound (but menu sound effects still present) but quickly CTDs...

I am out of coffee, so reading through your LO is impossible for me at the moment ;] will do that once I have coffee. Have you scrolled through your mod list in wrye to see if there are any red squares? That mostly indicates a missing master, one of the most common CTD causes. Have you installed any new mods / uninstalled any? Have you run a funny program of which you didnt know exactly what it did that could've messed with your program folders?

While reading this I thought I'd still scroll through your LO. Boss isnt perfect, in the way that it places mods it doesnt recognise at the very end of your LO, and you'll have to tag & sort these by hand. I don't recognize most of them, but they seem mostly armor mods (what do you need that many armor for? Do you change equipment every 5 seconds or do you have an army of 50.000 compagnions following you? Lol xD ). They are reasonabily safe anywhere in your LO, but I'm still going to try and find you a tutorial on load ordering & wrye taggin by hand. Gimme a couple o minutes :thumbsup:

Maybe the OP does what I do: Every time I find a new piece of armor in a mod, I compulsively add it to my house's collection. If there was a quest mod I downloaded, and it added the Cuirass of Feces, I'd have it on a shelf somewhere.

 

So, just to clarify: You didn't make any changes at all before this started up?

If that's the case, you could have a corrupt save file. Try moving your save games elsewhere temporarily and start it up again.

lol no red boxes dude, I am no nub. Also, I like my companions to have a selection of armors to choose from, and I like to mix and match elements from multiple different armors.

Please, everyone - in 6 years of modding I've never encountered something like this before. My install's folder setup is correct, my wrye bash isn't detecting any problems. My only hint is that in the extremely small moment that the menu appears before it CTDs I try to click on a menu option - but when I do it crashes. Again, there's no music in the menu screen but there IS sound... The chance that this is a bash patch or load order problem I believe is very very small, so there may be something wrong with the in game windows (IE save/load menus) OR whatever works the in game music.

 

Here's what I recently updated that may be causing the problem: I updated my devil may combat mod with the new version (SSS.esp, I notice the mod is hidden from public view now, I've disabled it but that did nothing) My UOP supplemental patch is 326, I copied over the .esp with the Frans MOBS 326 patch for it. I've updated my romuska fantasy store with the 3.3 final fixed version (I don't remember if I disabled this so I'll try again if I haven't). And finally, I am NOT running COBL as my stability becomes very compromised when I try to run it.

 

Does ANYONE have any hints for me? Or is everyone who uses FCOM with MMM OOO Frans and Warcry an anti-social e-hermit that don't check the forums whatsoever?

I don't have any clue about using any overhaul mods, but I have screwed my game up beyond repair before. Like, as in, I needed to wipe the computer to fix it. But I have no idea how to do that. Did you try following BBen's Revert to Vanilla guide?

Start with the basics. Be sure you are starting with OBSE and not the Oblivion Launcher. Be sure you have the latest patch. Be sure you have no missing masters. Be sure you are not running more than 254 mods.

 

Having too many mods in your data folder - even if they are not being used can cause crashes. I'm not sure about the exact number but is over 400. Move any unused mods out to another folder outside of Oblivion.
