(Request) Tower Shield Resizing

Hello.

 

Out of frustration I've resorted to requesting a mod - it's not a large mod and possibly not a very difficult mod but one that I'd love to see. My problem is that I would love to use the Warden's Tower Shield which is obtainable as a drop in Warden's Keep or alternatively Duncan's Shield from the main game - except the 'tower' shield model is very small. I always imagine tower shields to be rather long, not cramped up like they are in Dragon Age.

 

My request is for Tower Shields or either of the aforementioned shields to be resized to be longer.

 

I've tried to get into the Toolset myself but it always escapes me, either though a repeating SQL error or from me simply being out of my depth. I have no modding experience so I'm not sure if it's possible but if it could be done I would be eternally grateful.

 

Looking forward to hearing from some skilled and generous modder.

Here's a tutorial on how to resample items. I wrote it based on weapons, but it also applies to any of the meshes. It however only gives you the option for FULL scale. NOT just width, height, or thickness. So your changes will go in all directions. http://www.dragonagenexus.com/articles/article.php?id=41

You'll need a really easy to use program called DAtool, there's a link for it in the tute.

Yeah, toolset doesnt have any options for scaling items. To change just one aspect of the item, such as its height, but not it's width, that would have to be done in a 3d program like blender, gmax, 3dsmax, etc.

EDIT: Removed my utter fail comment earlier. I reread your post and stupidly I had thought it read DA Toolset rather than DA Tool all along.

 

Since I now learned to read correctly, I used DA Tool and it is amazing and easy to use! All fixed and my problem is solved. Thank you very very much!

Heyas! Well, I'm glad to hear that your shields are now how you like them. :) I've gotta admit, the vanilla tower shields really DO leave a lot to be desired...I totally agree with you there.

Indeed, its a much simpler and easier tool to use for some of the simple resampling. SOOOOOO much easier than trying to learn how to use a 3d program, locating the necessary plugins, and then trying to figure out how to make such and such work!

I'm glad to show up a couple of screenshots. I tried a few sizes to get it right, I didn't want the shield to become too huge but the way it was, it felt lost both on the character's back and in their hand. I finally settled on a scale of 1.16 and that worked perfectly for what I wanted.

I'm not quite sure if it constitutes a mod but would it be worthwhile hosting it on the DA Nexus site? After following your guide though, it's easy, everyone should be doing it. ^^

As for posting it in the mods section, I dont see why not. There's already several posts where they have resampled the weapons to be smaller. There's threads here in the request section (some old threads) that were requesting to make the shields larger. So I am SURE that you'd get downloads ;)

 

And while I'm not trying to get you to do more work..... (And this is just me) I think that if you were going to release it, that you might add the kite shields as larger versions, and perhaps even the small round shields and large round shields, just to be thorough, and to give people options. IF it was me that was doing it, I'd pack them up as separate zips, and one as an "all-in-one". That way folks could pick and choose which ones they wanted larger, or go with all of them all at once.

Thats just me tho, and its only a suggestion. ;)

That would be genius. I'll have to add that to the title page! Working on the mod now. I'm wondering if the sizing will need to be done for each race/gender. Might become too big on some race/gender combos otherwise.

well, as far as I know, the Qunari are the only ones who really have items that scale. (have seen shields be bigger on sten than on alistair.) I dont know if they really actually use a different model for the elves than the humans/dwarves, or not... as far as shields are concerned. Thats a very interesting question. Ima go check that out. Brb.

 

I suppose that you could if you wanted to. If you wanted to do a version for say... elven femmes, nobody is stopping you. Its you that is doing the work, so if you feel like its something you want to do, then go for it, if not, just wait and see if anybody requests it. ;)

And yeah, its the same model on elves as it is humans. so a smaller one for elves will still look smaller on humans.

Well, my download went fine, and my access is to the same servers as everybody else's. Have you tried it again recently?

And dont worry, anybody that posts anything there in the files section of the boards is gonna get hit with "can you do this, can you do that, you shoulda, you coulda... blah blah" :yucky: Don't let um get to ya ;)
