Building a PC

Its a dell. It's quite a good one too but it's getting old, and it's sound card doesn't work AND it can't connect to the internet.

EDIT: That's another thing, what about sound cards?

Hmm well I have an older one, SB XFi Extreme Gamer Pro...I don't think they sell them anymore. All I say is GODLY lol. I've never owned a soundcard, always used onboard. It does make quite a difference in games. Music sounds better too...makes my crappy Labtec speakers sound awesome lol.

Creative's Soundblasters don't seem to be all that bad. ASUS makes decent ones as well and HT Omega. Spend about $100-150 on one...the cheap ones aren't that great, as they are not much different from onboard.

something like these are very nice  Pricey, but nice lol.

You could just wait on getting a soundcard. Onboard audio isn't as bad as it used to be...Realtek is quite nice

Can't connect to the net? Is it not recognizing the network card?

No, it recognizes it, but if anyone else in the house is using ANY broadband whatsoever then it just can't connect.

Anyway, you're saying I dont NEED a sound card? Cause that's good. All together the components I'm going to get cost around

£590.

By the way, everyone who helped here is getting some juicy kudos.

Hi Katashy,

i think there isn't a mainboard out there without an onboard soundchip. Most of them are realtek like illiad said.

If you have a look here:

http://skinflint.co.uk/a527259.html

that's the Gigabyte board and it has an ALC 892 soundchip (7.1) so i think you will be happy with that.

Edit:

Thanks for the Kudo

Just sticking my 2 cents worth in on this.... my personal preference would be an ATI graphics card... comparably.. there's some Nvidia cards that are awesome. but Nvidia runs hotter by a bit than ATI and also is a power hog ATI cards use less power overall.. so a less expensive Power Supply. also just a tip.. regardless of you going Dual or Quad core... I'd suggest a board with SLI or Crossfire support. even if you never use it... having the ability to if you ever DO is worth the extra $$

Thanks for the input!

Oh, and what IS crossfire? I've heard of it but I'm not to sure what it does... is it something to do with two graphics card or something?

Just thought of ANOTHER thing I might need... Am I going to need something to allow it to connect to the internet through my wi-fi? And how much do these cost? I'm pushing the budget a bit now...

Well, Crossfire is the modus when you operate two ATI graphic cards in your computer. Not really necessary but a nice option to upgrade if you can have a cheap second one. Both graphic cards have to be the same, of course. Same for NVidia, there it is called SLI.

To use WiFi you need a WiFi adapter, there are USB ones available or PCI expansion cards. Don't know how much they are in UK but in Germany you can have them for 10€, should be the same i think.

Crossfire/SLI is pretty pointless. Spend $300 or so on two 5770s for example and in 6 months there will be a card that's $250 and just as powerful as the two of them lol. Nearly all games don't take advantage of SLI/Crossfire...I think Crysis is the only one.

WiFi adapters are cheap...$15, $20
