where to put .nifs?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I'm totally new to the forums, and I came to this fab site to try and fix issues when playing Fallout 3 with the nVidia 3D Vision system.

The last time I tried coding anything it was in Basic on my Acorn Electron, so please bear with me!

Ok, story so far:

I have activated the ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa. It seems to be working fine.

Went here, and successfully amended the .ini files to get the water looking just right in 3D, which works fine:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12600

However, when I unzipped the files for the sky fixes, they were .nif files. I was directed to extract them to fallout 3/data/meshes/sky/. The thing is, once I get past 'data', all the files in there are .bsa, for example - 'Fallout - Meshes.bsa'

I extracted the .nif files anyway, and then followed instructions to tick them in the 'data' section of the Fallout 3 launcher. They weren't in that section. The only extra things to check were for the GOTY DLCs.

I've looked around the FAQs, but I don't know what to do with these .nifs! Am I supposed to convert them into .bsa's? Or am I somehow supposed to open and amend the .bsa's to include the .nifs?

Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope!

The only way you would need to check anything off is if it came with an .esp file.

As far as I know the files are used based on the timestamp. So for instance if these .nif files were dated today and the files contained within the .bsa were from a month ago, it would use the newer files.

So if the files you downloaded had no .esp then they should be working when you boot up the game, without having to do anything else. As long as you add them in the right folder. So If you added them as you mentioned above they should work.

Thank you for responding so quickly - I appreciate your help!

However, I'm still a bit lost...

When I extracted the files from downloading, they were .nif files. Should they have been .esp or .bsa?

There's no sign of any other .nif file in my folder Fallout 3/data. The only files are .bsa. From your post above, I infer I have to open the .bsa file somehow? If so, how? I tried to open it just by clicking, but windows doesn't recognise it. Would I put the .nif file in there?

Hmm, guess you are supposed to create these folders yourself.

in your data folder create a foler called meshes

in there create a folder called sky

Copy the files in there, should work

You also said sth about ticking mods active and esp. Does it refer to that mod?

Edit: you can ignore these bsa files completely atm

Thanks all.

I've done that, and run the game. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the clouds or sky, as far as I can tell.

Oh well! I appreciate you guys trying to help me! At least I got the water fix sorted. I'll make do for now, as the rest of the game looks spectacular in 3D - I'm sure I can ignore that one hiccup.
