New to Oblivion Mods

Good Afternoon!

I apologize if this thread has already been posted, but I scanned through a dozen or so pages and didn't see it. I've been playing Oblivion on Xbox for some time, and I positively love it! When I found out that there were modifications and such that could be added, however, I instantly jumped on picking a copy for my PC and went about looking at all the mods. Here in lies my problem. I really have little idea in what I am doing. Most of the Mods I see say that require the latest version of the game, but I don't know if I have that or not. Is there anyone who might be able to suggest a tutorial I can go through, or who can even take a bit of time to walk a newbie through? I have Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Game of the Year Edition. Am I all set to go? Or are there patches/updates I need to obtain to be brought current. Help, please!

YOu probably are in that case. An easy way to check.. Hmm.. Well, I know my mod Scarlet Monastery requires it, so you can try downloading that and if the location appears, you have the latest version.

If it doesn't appear, you can easily download and install patch 1.2.416 here.

If you installed both disk 1 and disk 2 (Shivering Isles) from your GOTY edition then you are good to go... no patches/updates needed.

Note: If you are running the game on Windows Vista or Windows 7, then you might as well make one more change while you are just starting out here... If you have installed the game in the normal installation directory under Program Files (x86), you need to uninstall the game and then reinstall it into a non-Program Files directory. Many people here use something like c:\Games\Oblivion . This avoids lots of freakiness with the windows Vista/7 UAC security "feature" protecting you from your game.

Awesome! I'll go ahead and uninstall it and make that change. I really appreciate the advice/assistance!

Ah. If yu need install aid, I can provide that.

1. Open the zipped file.

2. click through it until you see a .esp file. It should be named something similar to the name of the mod you downloaded. Check if there is a meshes folder and/or a textures folder in the same place as it.

3. Open your data folder for Oblivion. By default, you can find it at program files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion/Data

4. Place all of those files (Meshes folder, textures folder, and .esp file) into the Data folder.

5. Open the Oblivion launcher. Click the button labeled Data Files. Find the mod you placed into the Data folder, and tick the box beside it.

6. If everything was installed correctly, the mod should work!

If you installed it outside the program files to defeat the evil entity known as UAC, it's in the location you installed it to. For example, if you installed to My Games, it's in My Games/Oblivion/Data. I think.
