What I Think And What You Think

Something that I find hilarious is the thought of all the countries in Africa utilising a united armed force. :P

Lol. I have a friend (now in the Royal Navy) who comes from Zambia - she's informed me enough about Africa to know how true that is.

Just to inject my semi-professional opinion into the debate (student of Military History - hmm, perhaps gifted amatuer's opinion? :P) I would have to concur with Peregrine a little bit on this one. He is indeed correct, no-one has power-projection capabilities like the US. However, the point Nappa raised about the economic starvation of the US is true as well I think. I don't know the specifics of the US economy, but I imagine that it couldn't rely on being self-sufficient for more than a couple of months, especially with regards to oil, and even more especially if they were forced to conduct an offensive campaign against opponents the world over.

As for the reasons for such a global attack on the US, I doubt we'll ever be there. The UN is a waste of time when it comes to enforcing its will on what we can surely all agree is now a rogue country (or at least a rogue president - Bush suxx0rss 11!!!) - just look at the run-ups to Iraq and Afghanistan for confirmation of that opinion, not to mention my very favourite anecdote about UN powerlessness, its failure to get to the US to stop blockading Cuba.

In any such scenario the US would have to have become a dictatorship to repress internal dissent (it would be losing hundreds of troops every week long before there was any agreement on invasion).

Surely they are there already? Obviously not losing 100's of troops a day (at least not within its own borders) but certainly able to repress internal dissent effectively.

I don't think the general US public is repressed, loveme. They are either brainwashed or apathetic. There is disagreement but insufficient interest to cause serious unrest yet. But the seeds are there.

Good point - the facilities are there, despite there being no necessity for them. As for how much the seeds are there, on a national scale I have no idea. All I know is the US guys I've spoken with ain't happy with the current state of affairs, although one can hardly call that an objective assessment of the general feeling of US citizens :P

"one of the best ways to keep ordinary people safe is to keep guns out of people's hands."

As I recall lovemeforwhoiam said that. If i'm wrong, my apologies.

BUT...

An armed nation is a peaceful nation. FURTHERMORE I can definitely think of placess where having a gun is a very, very good thing (so can you).

Also, making guns illegal means the honest, good, citizens will turn in their gun (they're good, why would they break the law?) and that ye olde criminals won't, and yeehah the criminals are now posessing guns...

...

...

...

...

Shucks and other things... My example has just flown the coop. In essentiality its a good example of why guns work as self-defense, which i WILL post later, but unfortunately the explanation of the incident, in the guys own words, is not available, the forum it's on refuses to load.

(Gasp, on a forum? Relax, I know the guy, he is a good family friend. We were the first to hear about it and what he said matches the forum post, Ijust want this example to come through in his words.)

Preegrine's first post in this thread I agree with wholeheartedly. Except, he didn't mention lawyers.

KILL THE LAWYERS! (Most of them. I mean, we have a ration of two lawyers for every human in america!)

Kill anyone who has ever sued someone for something dumb (I got an owwie booboo on my pinky finger when I dipped it into my hot coffee, now i'm suing the coffee company!)

Kill any lawyer who took on such a case and succeeded.

Kill the judges who didn't throw the damn thing out.

Oh yeah, I agree with that too. A proposal I'm sure everyone's heard before - allow every law-abiding citizen in the country to once a yera be allowed to kill a lawyer without reprisal. The world would be an extremely better place. I'll also add professional footballers to that as well - if we kill enough of them the national average IQ is sure to rise a couple of points.

And yes, that is indeed a genuine loveme4whoiam quote (send a postal order for £50 and you can have it framed and mounted with your very own choice of font). And I stand by it, but at the same time I agree with KzinistZerg when she says that it is specific to certain locations. For instance, I wouldn't exactly argue for a ban on weapons in Cambodia or Laos or some other unfortunately war-torn part of the world. But in the UK a gun is not necessary in order to secure some degree of personal safety.

I'm unfortunately unable to detect whether or not the first part of your post was sarcasm...

Enlighten meeeeeee!

I was partially jopking with that. I was going to add in that killing off most of the american celebs would also likely improve the overall IQ of the human race too, but...

Half-serious. I dispise lawyers who manipulate loop-holes in the law in order to get their patently guilty clients off the hook, or who intimidate witnesses who have been through a traumatic experience. Their entire breed disgust me and I think society in general would be much better of without them. Them and accountants. And marketing and PR people *shakes fist*.

Hey, don't knock marketing and PR people! We make the truth seem like a bad dream! What more could you want?

That's the problem with people these days. They go around trying to shatter each other's illusions all the time without ever stopping to think that there's some value in untruths. The way I see it, most of the time reality is far less desirable than a well-spun lie. At least an illusion is comforting.

The truth is always ugly and usually socially awkward, like a junkie after six years of grade a columbian.

There should be a legally established limit to the amount of publicity and advertising we are exposed to. Here In Spain, we have to put up with 2 or 3 lots of 15 minutes of ads in the middle of any 1-hour programme, and even then they have little "pop-ups" throughout the whole thing just to really do you in. Then, when you're watching the news, some %&$! comes on to tell you that Mitsubishi are sponsoring the sports section, and Danone offer you the weather. >:( AAAaaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!! >:( I press the clock button on the remote to see the time, and I get "Erotic Line... Dial 902 69 69 69....... 12:58 pm.......". So I go out for a drive, put the radio on, and LO! Verily I say to thee that the RDS receiver is being used to transmit special offers from a national hypermarket chain. burble, flibble, yelp... It's driving me nuts!!!! So I go home, try and get some rest and some dumb tart who gets my name wrong asks if I want to buy a broadband subscription. THE SAME FRIGGIN' COMAPANY AS YESTERDAY. And every day last week! WHY WON?T THEY ALL JUST LEAVE ME ALOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooone !?!

*Curls up in the corner making incoherent humming sounds* :(

Now its my turn to be unsure if you, cactoblasta, are being sarcastic. I really truly hope that you are, because that's scary otherwise. How could you live a life insulated by the illusions that society built for you? I can think of nothing worse than to be unable to see past the "well-spun lies" created for our "own good".
