Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop

Hi everyone: I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction. I'm a reasonably good photographer who is finally breaking down and learning to use her digital camera. I've had it for a few years now, but have stuck with my trusty film camera for long enough. I have a decent Canon, and I'm taking an online course just to learn the basic mechanics of the camera. Man, it certainly looks different from my old Minolta, but it takes great photos. Anyway, I would like to learn Photoshop. My husband has loaded Photoshop 7 onto my computers. He says that is a good version to start with. Does anyone know of a good (hopefully free) downloadable tutorial for it. I'm retired and on a fixed income, so I don't have a lot of disposable income. I have looked on the Internet, but I'm never sure which ones are good and which are just trying to sell you something. I have also seen some books on Amazon which are probably pretty good. But before I go that route, I thought I would check to see if anyone could give me any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Illiad86: Thanks so much for your quick response. Yes, it is a Canon EOS 20D, and I love it. I bought it a few years ago when I was still working. I'm finally going to try to learn digital photography and Photoshop all at the same time. I used a Minolta XD5 SLR for years, and it was the greatest camera; but I need to move out of the dark ages I guess. Anyway, I tried the site you sent, but apparently the Photoshop stuff is temporarily not working. I'll go back and try again later. Thanks again though. You and everyone on this site are just so helpful. I've been so pleased at discovering this whole Nexus experience. Let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you.

ahh very nice, we have the 450D :)

We don't use it much for regular photography, we do astrophotography, which is a lot different than taking regular pictures. Our camera still confuses me lol...my boyfriend knows more about it than I do in terms of what's the best exposure time based on the subject and lighting. I'm learning though :)

Photoshop now lol...I don't know jack all about that...I use GIMP, which is pretty much the same as Photoshop, but I think it's simpler to use.

Yeah, I love this place, everyone is very nice :)

Hmm you could try this one too:

Hi: Astrophotography, now that sounds really cool. I would not have a clue. But it sounds neat. I saved that site you sent me in my favorites, and I'll check it out tomorrow. I've had a killer migraine all day today, so have not spent much time on the computer. As far as exposure times, etc. I had gotten pretty good at all that back when I was using my old SLR camera, and the concept is still the same as far as that stuff goes. What I have to learn is all the digital gagetry. But I'm really excited to learn Photoshop. I've been playing around with it a little bit just to learn some of the icons and what they do. But it will be interesting to find a real class. I'll check that one out tomorrow. Thanks again for your help. Bye for now, Lynne

Oh, it's fun...can be a pain in the butt too at the same time...have to rely on the weather, which they never get right lol. Check out my astronomy thread. The boyfriend and I are still pretty noob at it, but we have gotten some beautiful pictures of Jupiter, the Moon, Saturn :) Light pollution is bad here though, so we haven't gotten any really good pictures of galaxies yet :( We just love space. Haha, the boyfriend is watching the Apollo 11 landing right now on the net...so amazing :)

That's always a good way to start :) See what all the little things do :D

Lots of people on here know more about it than I'd ever know...I just know how to use the colour levels and such :P I'm not all that big into using those types of programs though. I don't like to edit my screenshots, just doesn't feel authentic to me. I do love RAW images with digital SLRs though :)
