Skyrim suddenly started to randomly crash in main menu and when loading

Hi

I need some help.

I have for 2 months now been testing mods and never had any problem with the launching of game and loading savegames except when missing masters or missing mods from savegames.

Recently when launching skyrim it crash when reaching loading main menu around 7 of 10 times. Sometimes it crash by it self, other times when I click on empty spaces in main menu.

Also the game crash around 6 of 10 times when loading a savedgame. Sometimes I get "skyrim has stopped working", other times it just crash to windows with no message at all.

But when I first have managed to start up the game and is inside the game I don't get any crashes.

When running game without mod organizer and no mods it never crash on main menu, but even new savegames crash 5 of 10 times.

This started 1 week ago and I have no clue what to do about it.

The only thing I remember was that I installed and removed creation kit since I dont use it atm.

My setup:

Mod organizer 1.2.11

Skyrim latest version
STEP Core+extended installed all the time. This has worked without any issues the last month.

No changes have been done to Skyrim data folder, it look the same as when I installed the game.

Any ideas where to start here? What can have happened? What can cause Skyrim to crash on main menu?

Any help is appreciated

Mod list and specs. Happened to me 3 years ago when my video card was breaking, but hopefully its not that.

Thanks for replying, really appreciating it.

SKSE ini

A few other things:
I installed a new graphic card around the time this problem started to happen.
I think I should have done a bashed patch according to STEP guide but I did not do that.
I put both ini files in MO in "read only" to avoid anything getting written there that is not supposed to be there. And I forgot to remove this when changed video card causing MO to load with GTX 680 in ini settings instead of GTX 980.
SKSE and ENB seem to work. Only use ENB for ENBoost.

Have restored skyrim from backup after installing and reinstalling creation kit since I did not use it.

I have not tried to reinstall Skyrim or Mod organizer due to use of tools like ENB.

But all this worked for more than a month installing and reinstalling many mods and I cant see anything that is different since then. Same mods, same skyrim game, same ini tweaks.

So the only change has been a new video card? That's probably the culprit. Don't how to do registry edits to try fixing this without reinstalling though, If it were me I'd just wipe the Skyrim installation using the STEP revert to vanilla and reinstallation guide, then rebuild the mods.

I did more as said above. Anyway I reinstalled skyrim and reinstalled SKSE and ENB but no difference. Even running vanilla game without any mods and not using mod organizer cause crash the moment intro video is done and main menu appear.

Im clueless about what to do. Since this happen also when not running any mods or using Mod organizer I will not reinstall all mods at this point.

would really appreciate any help

Did the Game "detect" the new card?

Check the file..."Renderinfo.txt". See if the 980 is listed. IF it is NOT listed, delete the file, run the Original launcher. when the launcher starts, it should say "Detecting video hardware" or something along those lines, it will write a new Renderinfo.txt.

Renderinfo.txt is found here.>>>>.......\Documents\My Games\Skyrim

Ohh and P.S....>>>CPU: 2600k @ 4,4Ghz<<<<is that on AIR?? cause all i can get 100% Stable for my 2600k is 4.2... if AIR can ya post some secrets??lol

yeah it was found and registered in renderinfo.

To be honest Im clueless about why it did not work after reinstalling skyrim. Im not qualified to even start to guess what happened and Im not sure what that can make skyrim crash.

Next step is to uninstall all Steam applications. i have steam installed in 3 different locations and maybe this some how for unknown reason can cause this.

hehe..no its water cooling :P Its a very stable clock but I have to use 1.325 voltage to make it really stable so Im not sure how air cooling will like that :)

I have just purchased a GTX 970 and have been having similar issues.

I spent most of last weekend tracing down goofy issues. I got an EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 KR series.

First nV 9xx series drivers have poor support of Skyrim.

Some mods were creating CTD's with my middle level character rather than my high level one.

You only have three drivers to choose and they are fine with everything else(other games)for the most part.

I spent an hour on the phone with NVIDIA Monday and was making sure that they understood the issue.

You need to make this same call to their "corporate escalation team". It will help validate a bigger issue rather than a single rant.

I know that there are others out there that are suffering these same issues but it seems to be application related.

Because the flow of these cards has been tight, there are relatively few in the field, and running Skyrim. The supply is hand to mouth and I'm sure that his is aimed at selling the 7xx series. All Videocards are made at FoxConn TW and built to "Partner Brand Specifications". Both Manufacturers use the same TSMC Silicon Foundry and the Lithography process is the only difference. I'm pretty sure that is the supply bottleneck as with any launch.

There is no doubt that the cards are amazing, but this is a pain.

I was asked to beta test a new mod over the weekend, and it was a very large pain the drivers were black screen crashing the driver would puke and precision would stop the fan setting.

I'm able typically to game for hours and never crash even streaming OBS to Twitch.tv or YouTube.

My high level character is able to do this still, but the mid level guy had issues this was relevant because the mod that was being tested was a Civil War related mod.

You are the second person with a GTX 980 that has had either performance or stability issues.. Hope this helps

Again Call NVIDIA Direct..

Edit:

Because ENB is an API the 262 version binary might have issues with the new 9XX series drivers. This is one other possibility to consider this would create save corruption issues that can manifest itself a few ways.

Thanks for information Reynard131. The only thing is that many people dont have any issues with gtx 980 and skyrim so maybe our problems have something to do with the combination of certain hardware we use or other software interfering.

Anyway I also started to overclock right after I got gtx 980 and I also overclocked my cpu more so maybe that can be related to this, so I dont think it is a hardware/software issue but just something I have done wrongly, only time will show.

So this is what Im doing now:

1. Removing anything that have to do with steam (cleaning registry also)
2. Removing all overclocking

3. Reinstall nvidia drivers

4. Reinstall Steam

5. Reinstall skyrim

I will updated when I have done this.

A small update. I did all above and I have no crashes so far when running from original game launcher without and mods or tweaks, all is vanilla. I have restarted game 10 times and started a new game each time and as said no problems so far.

But when I try to run game from mod organizer with STEP core + extended installed game crash in main menu from time to time. The funny thing is that when I go back to start from original launcher without any mods I suddenly start to get main menu crashes here also.

Whatever issue I have with mod organizer seem to transfer to vanilla game also. So I wonder if it is some kind of cache or something else that create this problem. what about SKSE and ENB since they run from skyrim folder?
