Realistic Mining

I don't like the fact that when you mine, you hit the ore vein 6 to 9 times and only get up to 3 ore, then the ore vein is depleted.

This is so unrealistic to me, and it makes mining for ore needed for smithing very hard. The combined issues that mining for ore is very hard and unrealistic makes mining a chore and not fun, that is something you do not want in a video game.

When a real ore vein is mined, the miners first get a little ore as they are just scratching the surface of the vein. As they go in deeper the amount of ore they obtain goes up as they get closer to the richest part of the vein. When they get to the richest part of the vein, the ore obtain peaks. After that the miners get diminishing returns of ore as they try to grab every last part of the vein.

What i propose is a mod that makes mining more realistic and enjoyable.

As you mine an ore vein, the amount of ore you get from the vein is very small at first, but that goes up steadily. If you keep mining that vein, the ore that you will receive reaches a peak. After that continued mining would give you diminishing returns until the vein is completely depleted. This not only means that mining alot of ore takes alot of time, but it also means that you don't have to mine the entire vein in one sitting.

Of course, different veins should have different depths.

Surface veins should be very shallow. What this means is that you start off receiving very little ore from the vein, but that rises dramatically and reaches it's peak very quickly, as well as getting depleted quickly.

Mine Veins should be very deep (that's why they are being mined). What that means is that you start of getting a good amount of ore, the amount of ore you receive reaches it's peak rather slowly, and depletes even more slowly.

Veins in tombs, ruins, and other types of dungeons should be partially depleted (why wouldn't it's inhabitants long ago mined the ore?), thus only giving diminishing returns.

I don't know how hard a project like this would be. I would like to know if anyone is capable of pulling this off. Let me know if you are interested. Of course, if you do pull it off, I would like the credit for coming up with idea.

interesting, I don't believe it would be too difficult for any seasoned scripter. As I've seen the ore vein script, and it wouldn't take but a few tweaks.

Too bad I don't have the time to make this, good idea though

I'm not sure how much of a benefit "realistic" mining would be, because essentially whenever you need a lot of ore you go to the big mines in Skyrim already (or just buy ingots from Blacksmiths, or even steal them). The big mines as it is with default numbers yield 15-20 ingots each - more than enough for a smithing session, unless the goal is to smith items numbering in the 100's or 1,000's. If that is the case, yeah, might be better to call it "grinding" mining.

  • 3 weeks later...

See if any of the options here satisfy your wishes to some degree: Random Mining

There is also Advanced Mining.

Thank you. Advanced mining might hold me over for the time being. I will check it out when I get the chance. it will make do for now, at least until someone else comes along and makes the exact mod I am looking for, so thank you again.
