Ok guys i want to get into modding (probably heard that one before).

Im having sooo much trouble finding out what programs i need for it etc. etc.

Everywhere i look says something like: 3dsMax but doesnt specify the version or anything.

Nowhere summarises the whole process either so i have to look around for each separate part and i have no clue what im doing.

Id love for someone to just lay it out what i need, and possibly how to run through creating a simple weapon or something, because everywhere i look expects you to know what you're doing

and i cant start with that >.<

Id be extremely greatful.

Thanks :D

Welcome to modding.

Go to this link to read tutorials on many topics and look up specific information useful for your project:

Elder Scrolls Construction Set Wiki

I am not a modeler, but it sounds like that is the type of modder you want to become. I can say that 3dsMax sounds a little advanced and unusual for a new modder. More common tools to use would be TES CS, NifSkope, and Blender.

thanks a lot ill have a read through, ive had some practice with 3dsmax before which is why i assumed it'd be my best bet, but i suppose it would be best to start simple. kudos for you :D

For modding, most users of 3dsmax are using older versions, like 7,8,9 since they are supported by the nifscripts and can usually be gotten second-hand for less than the cost of the computer that will be running it. Gmax is also supported to a degree, is free-ware, but is missing several things which might limit its usage. While blender is good for those who aren't familiar with modeling and don't know other programs, using it can be a step short of hell for anyone who is familiar with other software.

Regardless, modeling cannot really be taught through tutorials or even videos and requires countless hours spent just working and playing with the program. About the only thing you can learn from tutorials or videos are things related to just exporting one mesh or 3d object for use with the game.

i usually prefer to learn by just playing around with a program, its how i learnt to use photoshop/after effects and C4D, its just hard when everyone says to use different programs and dont specify versions. That why i like it here, you get a specific answer to a specific question :D

Thanks btw ;) although im gonna hold off 3Ds max until ive got the basics, eventually id like to be able to make my own complex armour, but the thought of struggling to make it and THEN having to learn how to export it etc. is rather off putting, but i suppose ill learn eventually.

Rome wasn't built in a day.... right?

Well, both blender and 3dsmax have their own learning curves related to exporting, and no matter which you use, you will eventually need to learn how to work with Nifscope.

But yes, it's best to stick with something easy and learn the basics. Doing modeling for a simple weapon in 3dsmax and exporting it for use in game can go quite a long way toward learning the basics. In doing that, you not only learn basic mesh construction, but also texturing, scaling, exporting, and all the stuff related to making that weapon as an item in the game.

Yay finally another C4D user. I personally entered with some knowledge of 3D modeling and decided to apply it to making armor/weapon mods for oblivion. Honestly I think this is a good way to start which it seems to be your case. Good luck either way and btw the link David Brasher is a good place to start.
