Psychadelico
I guess this is a pretty dumb question but here goes. Are there rich merchants who have more than 1200 money or does this amount only go up as your mercantile increases?
MrGray
Well, I haven't found one. But there is a way to increase their money. 1) I went to the altar of spellmaking and mede "Fortify Mercantile 60 pts for 7 secs" spell. 2) Casted it. 3) Talked to merchant. Now, while spell is working on me, he has "invest 500 gold in this store" dialogue option. 4) Well, I pressed that. It removed 500 gp from my inventory and increased merchant's money by 500. So now he has 1700 gp to barter with me instead of those 1200. EasyIf your mercantile skill is lower than mine you will need greater fortyfy mercantile spell, I think that's ovious. Psychadelico
Can you increase their money more than once? I got some expensive items (5000+) and i would like to get at least half its worth so 1700 gold wont cut it. Is it possible to train mercantile? I can't be certain of this (since I've never Mastered the Mercantile skill) but it tacks on another 500 gold to the merchant's limit automatically. I wonder if it stacks with the previous 500, thus giving you the ability to increase the merchant's yield by a total of 1000 gold (and thus giving you a merchant with 2200 gold as his price limit). You'll never really be able to sell the expensive stuff (2500+) without using a mod, but that's ok, since there's nothing really to buy at that level either. If you desperately want to sell the stuff, there's a Soul Gem Merchant mod who sell Black Soul Gems, is an Apprentice Merchant, and has 5900 septims. The official mod Frostcrag Spire (Wizard's Tower) has a merchant who is a Novice with 2000 septims, and there's a Black Market with merchants who have 10k septims and all basic equipment in the game for sale. Finally, there is one merchant in vanilla with 1500 septims, but it's a fence only available to high ranking Thieves Guild members, and has a Mercantile skill of 100. Another option is to download one of the crafting mods which destroys old equipment in exchange for resources. As to the Mercantile skill, yes it is trainable, but it takes forever. In order to gain skill you need to be haggling (ie. have the Haggle bar somewhere to the right of the left-most position), and you gain skill per sale not by value. So to increase speed of skill gain, you should sell stacked items (like arrows) one at a time. If you plan to do that you might want to download the No More -How Many- Prompts mod. The mod can get annoying, though, as it's all or nothing in game. Another option is to create or download a mod which changes how fast Mercantile gains skill (Faster Mercantile Levelling mod, for example). Honestly, changing skill gains is so easy that it would likely be easier to make you own mod than find one for download. All you need to know is that the higher the number is, the faster you gain skill. With high Mercantile, two things happen. At skill 75, you can invest in a shop by paying 500 septims to permanently raise that specific merchant's bankroll (doesn't work on some modded merchants). At 100, all merchants that you deal with have an addition 500.
Ygern
Becoming a Master of Mercantile is the only way to increase an unmodded Shopkeepers money, and then only if you make the 'Investment' of 500 septims. But frankly, it doesn't really matter. There is very little in the game that costs much money, usually each shop has one unique enchanted item, and that item usually doesn't measure up to items you find in Oblivion gates and receive as quest rewards. I know at low levels your relative poverty is a bit frustrating, but that's always the way! After clearing a couple of Oblivion gates and selling on Bandits / Maurauders armour a few times you will have more money than you can ever use. At the momenet, for example, I own every house for sale in Cyrodill and have bribed nearly every citizen and guard alike, and still have countless thousands. I have rarely bought anything at a shop, after all they have virtually nothing that can't find for yourself in a Fort, Cave or Ruin. Still, to add variety to the game I have installed mods that add more armour to Armory shops as you level up, as well as more road-side merchants to the Imperial City. If you have an item worth more than 1700, you may as well hang onto it. Get a Mannequin mod and display your loot in your very own Artifact Museum! I need Rollios for my bunghole! I am the great cornholio! Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh..... Setttle down, Beavis! Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh... OK, if your an expert of mercantile, shops always have more gold to barter with you. When your a master, you can further increase that to 500 more by investing in their shop. In the thieves guild, Fathis Ules or whoever was the master of mercantile has the most gold if your a master of mercantile. He has like... Uhhhh... heh heh heh... Uhhhh... Heh heh heh... 3600 Septims or something... Huh Huh Huh..... BUNGHOLIO... BUNGHOLIO!!!
