Daedric War Axes Aren't What They Used To Be...

For some reason, when my latest character picks up a Daedric War Axe (the one handed axes) I get a pop up window (like the normal journal notices on what to next on a quest) and am told that the axe has crumbled to dust. It doesn't seem to effect any other Daedric weapons or any other war axes that I've noticed, just Daedric War Axes. iIt doesn't happen if I take the axe form a body or a chest, just if I pick it up off the ground. The only mods I have are BTMod and another one with better textures for distant terrain. Never had it happen with previous characters using those mods. I am now running the Bethesda official patch but had the beta one when the privious characters never had this problem.

Has anyone else seen this?

Very odd. I found this:

"Mehrunes Razor is bugged.Every daedric war axe will turn to dust if you try to pick them up.You can't even fix it in the CS since they used a different version. It doesn't add anything that can't be made in the CS already.Other than that it's a decent sized dungeon with some good battles."

Edit: Definitely a serious bug whatever it is.

Without poking around in the construction set yet, I would guess there is a script attached to Daedric war axes. if so I would think it could be fixed but I have not played with modding much. Maybe I'll take a look tonight and see if I can find anything unless some version skew in the CS makes it impossible to view or edit the script (or just eliminate it). I'm playing on the pc so I can always give my character a replacement axe if I really want to have one. I'm pretty sure that the axe will be usable once it's in my inventory. sellable, etc. Just can't put it down and pick it up again. I assume the intent must have been to have a specific axe (probably belonging to the guardian of Mehrunes Razor) disintegrate rather than all of them.

I remember when I had to delete a script in Tribunal that caused the leader of the DB to never ever shut up. His dialogue would be stuck in a loop that I could not escape. No harm came of it. (Luckily the quest activator was also a letter he was carrying.)

There's a thread on one of the ES forums that gives more detail on this. Apparently the mod ends up completely replacing the original Daedric War Axe settings, presumably unintentionally since it was meant to be the lowest level of leveled axe for the Champion in the mod. An easy fix is to use the CS to save the settings of the original axe in a new .esp file with a date newer than the mod. Just open the CS, change one of the values for the axe in Oblivion.esm and change it back again so the editor sees the data as having changed. Save as a new .esp, add this to your data files when starting up Oblivion and the problem is gone. (There is a link for an ESP to do this in the ES forums thread but it's an easy fix for PC users.)
