GPU or CPU?

Hi everyone

I'm a long time lurker here and have been playing Oblivion on PC for about a couple of years and still haven't tired of it!

Vanilla Oblivion runs perfectly on my computer and I am now trying out mods.

I've got a things running pretty good at the moment with FCOM (OOO+MMM etc) and QTP Redimized Reduced and AWLS

All is good.

I installed Banasplit Better Cities and in IC my frame rate drops so much that it's pretty much unplayable. I tried out OSR and Streamline but neither helped. I really want to use Better Cities - after exploring the place (at a bad FPS) it's really a shame to go back to the Vanilla version.

Anyway my question is, will upgrading to a 1GB graphics card sort out the prob or is this a CPU issue?

I'm using a Dell Optiplex GX745 with 4GB RAM (I beleive CPU is a dual core 2.5Ghz - will have to check at home later) with an Nvidia 9600 512MB low profile graphics card.

Thanks

Try this, it will boost how much Ram oblivion can use ( the default is 2GB ).

Do not use the LAA patch on a 32-bit OS. Please... Oblivion is CPU-intensive. Any decent graphics card can handle Oblivion.

Edit: BC drops FPS on any system. If you are getting almost 20FPS on average in cities, you are doing great. If you want to get higher FPS in the city, lower the object load distance slider in Video.

Didn't realise the 4GB patch was for 64-bit only....

It's dropping to less than 10FPS.

I also get that around Verona House when using VH Bloodlines

Checking online shows the PC is a dual core @ 2.1Ghz.

I guess a new computer would be a better way to go.

What sort of specs would anyone recommend? I don't need to buy a top of the range PC.

I'd like to get something that will run these type of mods at a decent framerate whilst not busting the bank.

Cheers

There is a possibility that it could work on a 32-bit OS, but the chances of that causing system instability or plain not working are significantly higher.

2.1GHz dual core is not great. The Core2Duos and i3 and i5s are a different story. The architecture is more important than the speed.

Always post a budget when you are asking for system build recs.

Many thanks Tomlong.

I haven't posted a budget as I've literally only just started thinking about it.

Also, I'm in Australia so will have to check AU prices etc.

Those links are a real help though.

Thanks again, much appreciated :)

Oh, there should be an US to AU currency calculator somewhere... Google should have one, haha. Also, if you really want an nVidia card instead, and you have a little change, the 460 is supposed to be the new, best bang-for-your-buck , video card from that chipset maker. ATI is still HD5770 or HD5850, depending upon your budget. The latter is more powerful, of course. 2GB, or the closes to that for nVidia (their numbers are always off) will cover anything Oblivion could throw at you, but keep in mind that VRAM is largely for loading high resolution texture. Almost everything else (except for sound if you get a sound card) hits your CPU, even meshes (i.e., the meshes added by QTP3.) 1GB is plenty unless you really have a crazy mod setup with tons of texture replacers, or lots of high rez clothing and armor mods...

Good night!

Download a PyFFi'ed version or Download PyFFi and PyFFi Automator and clean up the new meshes yourself. Allot of times this will help out with stutter and frameraep.

Other than that if you have already given OSR and Streamline all I can recommend is updating your gaming rig.
