Mounted Attacks

Wow, this thread sure got derailed quickly. ;) The truth of the matter is, no matter what game you play, it's always going to be the case, at least for some, that it could have been a lot better. I won't bother to go into any more detail than that.

As for the original topic of this thread: mounted combat isn't ever gunna happen. Bethesda decided to remove all ability to add animations to the game, so that totally eliminates any chance of mounted combat, sadly.

One thing i think we need for oblivion is to be able to attack while mounted on your horse.

I'm working on a script for doing it... (Low priority, since I have a few of my own ideas I want to make real before doing other people's).

PS: You say that melee fighting on a horse is impossible? How about archery?

My mod will include all of them, since they are all possible in real-life... Magic will be limited. Only able to cast spells when the horse isn't moving. You can't concentrate enough while stearing a horse in the middle of a battle..?

While I am sure that the details of horseback combat are fascinating, ignoring a moderators request for the thread to remain on topic is not a good idea.

This thread is ONLY for the discussion of adding horseback combat/archery/spellcasting to Oblivion. Which seems still seems pretty impossible at the moment.

So bear witness to the awesome power of the Moderators!! :D

So how are you going to script horse combat BGHis, when you can't add animations? Make it a dice-rolled thing, based on stats and you simply press Space and attack, a text-box saying the damage you did? Because I think that's the extent it could be taken to without, obviously, adding animations which we can't do. Still, I'd probably get that text-based one just I can stay on my horse to deal with a bandit.

Sorry. Forgive me. I tried to stay on subject. :) I will smite myself. Hmmm...I must make up my transgression. I will now eat a piece of chicken in your honor. Crap! Off-subject! Um....yeah, Horseback combat would be cool. However, it seems unfeasible, unless somebody has SERIOUS talent.

Hey man, why don't you just let things flow? You don't have to go wreaking a good thing-what harm is it going to do?

It is not my job to let things "flow." I have to maintain the rules of the forum. If a poster comes here looking for information regarding combat on horseback in Oblivion, he should not have his time wasted by reading a bunch of irrelevant historical debates.

If this thread continues in such a fashion, I will have no choice but to lock it. Why can't people just follow the simplest of rules?

Uhm... As I said before (maybe in another thread), I suck at modelling...

This will be scripted ONLY.

The animations will be kinda' strange. (You'll need a decent skill of acrobatics in order to be able to "activate" the feature.)

Indian style standing on horseback is maybe my only opportunity, but I'll give it a try! (please don't hijack my idea, let me try it first)

PS: Tell me the way you want to do horseback fighting... Sideway on the horse, standing on the horse, sitting on it?

I have to agree. There were so many more possibilities with the technology, especially the physics engine. I mean, imagine using telekinesis as on offensive tool! I really, really expected to be able to kill people with a sword...using my mind! I wanted to be able to tip over rocks on my unsuspecting enemies! But no. The game doesn't include that sort of thing.

I'm not quite sure about the telekinesis spell... (Haven't played mage that much ~ yet.)

Is it possible to turn while using it?

If yes, then you actully CAN tip rocks over your enemies that hurts them... With a *little* tweaking in the CS, of course. :)

I could make a mod for it, but my list of to-do mods have increased with 4 since last week, so I'm afraid somebody else has to do it - or just wait.

If not, then it's still possible, but you would either have to do a hell of a script, or some lame (works only from front or back)-style feature.

Anyway, it's at the buttom of my to-do list. Right under my Tamriel Moonwalking mod.

Just a little teaser from the readme: Ever dreamt of moonwalking in Tamriel? No, not the silly Michael Jackson thing with your feet... Ever dreamt of having not your own house, but your entirely own moon?

This mod brings to you this incredible feature! All-new planet concept for Oblivion. Walk a turning planet (yes, that's right! All planets/moons DO rotate, this one included! Excited to see how the havok engine will handle upward-down physics? Wait and see! :)

Just read your whole post. (I didn't do in the first place. Silly me.)

I don't like text-based combat. It's cool in MUDS, but suck in a such a "graphics game" like Oblivion.

Animations can't be added? Think that you're a little wrong. We just haven't "decompiled" the GameBryo format yet...

How did the developers add animations? They had the right tools (probably copyrighted by either GameBryo or Bethesda)

It still ain't impossible. GameBryo claims on their website, that they have plugins for 3dS and Maya. They claim that using these plugins, you can create a animations, and they provide a long list of games that uses their format, including Oblivion, on the same page.

It's GBHis, not BGHis :)

PS: No offend. Let's not start some dense flamewar just because I said you were wrong. I could be myself, ye know!

My apologies, didn't read your name right

I was under the impression that animations couldn't be added to the game at all because Bethsoft were refusing to release the plugins or something. Have to ask Peregrine, he got nice and steamed about it when the community was told, along with just about every other serious modder I imagine. But if this Gamebryo company is saying we can now, excellent news indeed!

At the moment, we can't... I'll be using existing animations for my mod.

GameBryo's the "authors" of the .nif format. They must know how to do it... The plugins weren't available from their site, but it's very confusing... take a look at it.
