Fallout 3 is ctd on startup and I can't find the source.

BBEN, GFWL isn't an issue here, I have the Fallout 3 DVD retail version and I have been playing my game every day for the last 2 weeks. What COULD be an issue if thesupafro has the same version as me is when he / she goes to install the DLC's, But for right now we won't go into that.

@gromulos, there is a third possibility - the original FO3 required GFWL ( Games for windows live) instead of steam. I don't know if the steam version still has that in it or not. But there is a patch here to remove the GFWL requirement. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/1086/?

Last....windows "Microsoft" is pulling support for windows 8 very soon, it's been shut down from retail sales, windows 7 is also in the snipers scope too. Technology is changing very fast as of now. there won't be a tomorrow or later thing available. PC games are going to be changing fast. your running out of time.

MS has officially stated that extended support for Win7 will last until Jan 20, 2020 - however there will be no more service packs issued. This is not anything new, this was the schedule all along.

And for Win8 until 2023. Again, with Win10 coming soon, I don't expect any more service packs for it either - but you will still get regular security updates just like you always have.

Basically I need to know if the data in question which is provided from a "retail DVD second disc GOTY version.

IF you want a quick analytic version , short and dirty, post the size, file size the windows explore says is on the disc of this file from the game directory.

........(FalloutLauncher.exe )...that tells all. post that and I will know what to do. the file size only as it is right now.

Back to windows.....If things go as they always have gone with Microsoft, you can bet updates will be accidental sent out that will cripple the OS currently considered a security risk under the guise of "security reasons."

any way's. hard ware difficulties are accident prone to fallout3 even for me if things go wrong on any system, the old software will just plain choke on it's self.

But if you one of those lucky ones and get a really clean install ! it's solid as a rock baby, really fast, smooth as silk and NO ctd's Ever. That;s the key...getting it installed without bugs following it around.
