Black borders on edited textures--help!

So, I've just started trying to understand how to mod textures in Dark Souls 2. So far I've tried to make some simple changes to a couple icons, which worked-- sort of. While editing the files, their backgrounds seem to be black. Considering that's how the textures came, I assumed that the game just interpreted flat black as transparent (or something like that), but the black is actually showing up. I tried saving the files as .dds and then I tried as .png's. I'm not sure why the black is showing up, how to get rid of it, or whether I should be using .dds or .png. If anyone can clarify these issues, I would be very thankful!
