ElricOfGrans
I have this really odd crash that is so regular I am actually predicting it nine times out of ten. Essentially, it appears to happen when I am passing from one cell to the next, and seems to require me to pass through so many cells before it happens. I will give an example. I am at the Imperial City. If I load the game and immediately leave the city, all is fine. If I instead load the game, run through every district, and perhaps visit a shop or two, then leave it will crash the moment I activate the gate. I do not even see a loading screen. Since this is predictable, I always save before activating. I restart Oblivion, reload my game, and now I can exit without issue. I then walk to, say, Bravil. Lets say I pass through Weye and follow the road. I expect the game to crash around about the Inn of Ill Omen, perhaps a little past it. I load my save, then can continue the rest of the way to Bravil, but will again crash when I activate the Gate (with no loading screen seen). Reloading again, I can now enter Bravil and use the city without any issues, until I decide to leave again. The same thing happens whenever I travel between any city and the next. The Imperial Waterfront appears to exasperate this. If I load in the Waterfront, I can enter the tunnel (Better Cities), and usually enter the Temple District, but it will crash when I attempt to enter any other district. If I come the other way, load the Temple District, pass through the tunnel, and enter the Waterfront, it will usually crash after I get to the other side of the Lighthouse. I am assuming this has something to do with RAM usage, as I used that cool utility that allows Oblivion to address more than 2GB RAM and it extended my play time, so to speak. I seem to get a few extra cells before the crash happens. I have 3GB, so not a lot of extra leeway. I use QTP3 Redimised, which probably hurts my play time a fair bit. I would assume it safe to bet I am not the first to notice something like this. By any chance, has anyone made a mod that can fix/reduce the problems causing this? I am guessing it is some kind of engine bug (excessive memory leak, or dodgy caching), which may be too much to hope for a fix to.
Valkyrie
Might wanna have a look here: Crash help And try these patches/mods Try this: Link and this: Link
ElricOfGrans
I took a look over the list of help, but none of them seem to describe my situation. I use all three unofficial patches and the crash prevention system.
Valkyrie
I just saw the part about your ram. Hows about opening your task manager as I described in this thread: Clicky Then seeing if when it crashes coincides with your memory being maxed out. ElricOfGrans
Sometimes I have to use task manager to close it after the crash, so I have seen the memory usage plenty of times. Yes, it is maxing it out. That is why I suspect some kind of memory leak or caching issue.
bben46
See if this one helps: Purge Cell Buffershttp://www.tesnexus....ile.php?id=9139 Also, Oblivion is not the only thing using ram. Any background processes will also take a portion. Vonage, magic jack etc can take quite a bit. Any IM type program will use both ram and processor cycles. And of course any virus, spyware and any other malware use ram. So, In this order, update your antivirus and run a deep scan. Then use at least one and preferably 2 spyware removers. Then a registry cleaner ( I use CCleaner) and finally a defrag program. Then to minimize the background processes and free up more ram, try Game Booster - it's free, but watch for the extras they try to get you to install as you probably don't need another tool bar or another search engine replacing the one you use. http://majorgeeks.com/Game_Booster_d6148.html MajorGeeks.com http://www.majorgeeks.com/ is a good source for FREE anti virus, anti spyware, registry cleaners, defrag programs and a lot more. ElricOfGrans
I was already using Game Booster, which I had noticed made a big difference. I have tried playing today with Purge Cell Buffers, and set it to every 3 loads. It *definitely* made a difference. I usually crash every 15 minutes, but at one time today I ran for over 2 hours before I *chose* to exit the game! I still get some crashes (the Imperial Waterfront is still crash-tastic), but that one, simple addition has made the game significantly more playable. Thank you!
