Computer Crashing

Try again, this time just running IE, no 3d games. Surf around for a few hours. If it crashes durring this, it's a power connection somewhere (probably).

If it is a power problem:

If you know what a computer looks like inside, and what to and not to do... You might want to try checking connections between your power supply and your hard drives (start at the outlet). Think back 3 months ago, did you do anything to any of the connections, or move the computer around? IF so, remember what you did and start there.

If you don't have reasonable knowledge of what's inside a computer, it's probably best to ask someone who does to check out the problem. There are certainly enough things you could do wrong by blindly going in and checking connections, possiby causing the computer to be useless. (not really, but I have to say this to void legal responsibility incase you do something wrong.)

I have a similar problem, and it only happens when using high-end games (Battlefield 2, Oblivion) etc. Half-life 2 works fine though...so, I don't know if that will work.

Just finished surfing IE for the whole night. Nada. Must be the game, maybe a bug that affects people with weak video cards?

Ok, Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and recovery, uncheck "Automatically restart", regenerate the error and then tell me, in perfect verbatum, what the error code is, and the first memory address listed. The symptom gives me an estimation of KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED or MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. Do so with rapid wings, because a bluescreen means bad things. A bluescreen will never come from software conflicing with software in 2k/XP.

Why is that setting checked as default? I spent 4 hours looking for the reason that it restarted on my new Windows/XP system. My Windows/2k didn't. It stopped neatly so that I could read what the heck was going on...

...Unless said software is running with kernel privileges.

I know the problem. It's called Windows.

You know... There's this virus that identifies itself as 'System Idle Process.' I came across it yesterday.

It uses most of your system resources when surfing internet, etc.

Go check your Task Manager under 'Processes.'

If it's there, you're infected.

00000 =Spoiler= 00000

The system idle process is NOT a virus. It was a silly joke from my side. Do NOT remove it/terminate it/harm it. It's ment to be there and does NOT eat your system resources.

If it only crashes during games, it could be a temperature issue. Video cards often run hot enough to shut you down, but only usually during high activity - like when a mob of goblins is coming after you, and you are loading a new area, and you have visible enchantments...

Anyways, easy enough to check in your BIOS under temperature settings what trips the halt. Try opening your case if that's the problem - temporary fix till you get more fans or a certified technician. Even an updated video driver...

If you have a laptop, you're pretty much effed, they run hot anyway. Ice packs? ;)
