CTD + issues with stacked items + items disappearing

Recommended Posts

I started experiencing an issue where items will randomly not stack properly. Like I'd have a stack of 5 with three individual identical items in inventory or containers. Being stolen or not doesn't seem to matter. Later I noticed some items began randomly disappearing from inventory or owned containers. Then I'll do some random action such as change areas, sleep, or reload, and they'll be back. Incredibly annoying, almost game-breaking, but tolerable.

But now I'm getting crashes-to-desktop when trying to move those oddly stacked items. Like I'll see three individual, separate, identical items. I'll move one into a container, then suddenly a stack of 25 appears in place of a remaining individual item. I move the other individual one and another stack of 7 appears. Moving one of them might work, or might CTD. Also, moving an item or stack of items might cause a currently-disappeared item to reappear - almost certainly a related issue.

Currently using only OOO 1.3 and Oblivion retail patched to 1.2

Any ideas for me or am I kinda screwed?

PS: I don't understand what I have to do to patch OOO to the current stable version, am I right in thinking I have to upgrade in this order? :

Get the FULL version of OOO from here -- you only need the one file that is 406.6 Mb; you do NOT need the Beta patch. If you install the full version you do NOT need to install any extra plugins, as they are all included in the full version -- this might be where your duplicate items are coming from.

Do you have any other overhaul mods, such as MMM, Tamriel Travellers or COBL? If you do, and don't use a Bashed Patch, you can get similar anomalies.

Items disappearing from containers is common. A container in game list can only hold so many items. When that number is exceeded they just don't show up On the list. But they are actually still there. If you remove some of the objects from the container the missing stuff will show up.

As to stacking, I have never seen a good explanation of the wacky way it sometimes stacks and sometimes doesn't.

Thank you both for these terrific answers!

@ bben46

I read elsewhere that items don't actually disappear, they just aren't shown. Makes sense, since they always wind up returning via some random action that flushes the memory. I was having the most trouble with alchemy ingredients, and I have a massive collection, so it could certainly be caused by this excessive amount. Thanks for this tip! I like the quote in your signature about experience - ain't it the truth?

@ Hickory

I appreciate you clarifying this for me, since I've read conflicting reports elsewhere about having to install each update in turn. I'm glad that I don't have to, but I wonder whether I'll break my savegame by uninstalling 1.3 and installing 1.33 instead. I'd better read up before I try it. I wouldn't mind losing all my OOO items, but I've logged quite a few hours on the character and I'd hate to start over. Might be worth it though if all else fails.

Thanks again to both of you for your time and help! Long live the game! :)

You should not break your save game by going from 1.3 to 1.33, but be careful to either make a backup of your save game or, when you change over, save your game in a new slot.

You're welcome. :)
