New to Nexus

Hi, I'm new here. I joined because I recently started playing pc video games, & man am I glad I did. I will never buy a console version of a multi-platform game again -- good lord it's almost like playing a completely different game. Anyway, among the games I bought to start with I picked up Fallout 3 & Oblivion, & I wanted to find out what the modding community was like so I went to the Fallout 3 Nexus site. I know next to nothing about modding but I'm really interested to find out more. Maybe someone can recommend some mods for me to download for either Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

Hello and welcome to the Nexus, and to PC gaming. To my mind, you picked a disastrous time to join the pc side-with so many debarkles and good series going bad, but it's always nice to see a new face.

I have very little experience with Fallout, but I've been modding Oblivion for a while now, in addition to being very experienced at it. (two level 165s, beat that mr 22 who thought he was an ace :) )

When choosing mods, its important to fit together several that work well together, in a sort of pile. So like any pile you'll want to get a few big ones, and then add littler mainly aesthetic mods on top.

Starting with the basics, you'll want these. 7-ZIP OBMM. OBSE. BOSS. and or Wrye Bash. (you'l need Python for bah though, but they're all freeware) These are the core utility programs you'll want. OBSE increases the complexity of Oblivion's code abilities. basicaly it triples the complexity of the mods it can run, and makes it much harder to "confuse" with glitchy mods. OBMM allows you to open OMOD files, which are self installing pre packaged mods. 7-ZIP lets you unpack the mods themselves and lets you install them. All these other items are optional, 7-Zip isnt, no 7-Zip, no mods.

Once you've got those, you can add the mods themselves. To start off I'd recomend OOO. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhual is a single lump of deliciously good code. It's a techincal overhual of Oblivion, but also a compilation of new content. Think of it as a big expansion pack mixed with a patch. It makes a the game a bit harder, and it WILL blow it up if you dont run it on an entirely new character, but it is well worth any effort involved, a great place to start.

You should also try Better Cities-it can be brutaly rough on old pcs, but it just makes the oblivion cities vastly more beautiful and beleiveable. More houses, more npcs, more shops, and a huge amount of extra detail.

Natural environment is a must have. It is no drain on power, but it adds working seasons, and vastly superior lighting effects when outdoors. Furthermore it adds splendidly beautiful new night skies, and birds and insects.

Facial Textures By Enayla and IFT 21 vastly up the facial detil level, and you can push the bar even higher by adding Elaborate Eyes, and Ren's Beauty Pack, which do the same thing for hair and eyes, and add nearly 40 more hairstyles to boot.

And finaly, if you can get it to work, Deadly Reflex is worth the pain. Though capricious and a little unstable, DR 5/DR 6BETA are worth it, enormous improvement to the combat system, aswell as adding a critical hit system, knockback for magic, and the ability to decapitate and dismember, fallout style, on power attacks.

Lastly, Midas Magic, the #1 highest rated of all Oblivion mods, is one you'l really want if you like to cast spells, it gives you nearly a hundred new spells, some of them truly awesome. Like the ability to gain wings, levitate, transform into animals, do all sorts of new magic like stun spells and ricocheting disc blades. And also a trio of novelty spells that let you summon possesed watermelons, giant killer pumkins, and one that lets you through nukes.
