Pre-made Lip Files?

First off, my computer just won't let me make lip files. I uninstalled my CS and installed the old one, made over a hundred individual lip files, and when I reinstalled CS 1.2 the files were all kinds of jacked. It's probably because I can't find a converter for 64bit .wav files, but at this point it's a non-issue because I'm just really frustrated.

But from the ashes, brilliant idea for a mod -- everyone uses silent voice, but why hasn't anyone made generic lip files? Sure, the movement wouldn't match, but if you have a 5 second sound file and a 5 second lip file to go with, it'd still look ten times better than no lip files at all. The closest thing I found is thePOSTALdude posted a 9-second lip file. Can anyone with the ability to use both Construction Sets whip up this modder's resource?

( I'll let you play with my companion mod beta. =D )

Take a look at the attached file called "Lip Templates" on this Construction Set page. Maybe that can help you out.

Here is the included readme file:

Name: LIP Template

Version: 1.0

Date: 2007/10/29

Author: Kivan ([email protected])

Web Site: http://www.baldurdash.org

File Mirror #1: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13742

File Mirror #2: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11367

LIP Template is an Oblivion modder's resource, a simple ESP plug-in file (and a few empty folders) that solve a problem.

The problem is that the new v1.2.404 Construction Set can't generate LIP files. These files are used to lip-synch NPCs to their audio dialogue. Only the old v1.0.303 Construction Set can do this. Bethesda indicated the voice middleware was incompatible with the new Construction Set and won't be releasing another one.

So, most modders now have the old Construction set's .EXE file kicking around for generating LIP. Launch that, open Oblivion.esm, edit some dialogue text, place and rename WAV file, generate LIP and done... but some never get that far because the second part of the problem shows itself: If the modder installs Shivering Isles, it replaces Oblivion.esm with a new one, and the old Construction Set won't load it. The modder is left with the option of reinstalling Oblivion, copying Oblivion.esm to a different filename, reinstalling Shivering Isles, repatching, and having 235MB of hard disk space wasted for the useless old ESM and having to rename back and forth between the two of them, just to have some default dialogue to load.

What LIPTemplate.esp does is replace the need for the old Oblivion.esm. It's a v1.0.303 plug-in file without a master, so it loads instantly. It contains only the default races of Tamriel (including the normally unplayable ones) and ten lines of dummy dialogue. This allows the modder to load it in the v1.0.303 Construction Set, change the text of the dialogue, place correctly renamed WAV files, generate LIP and exit without ever having to load Oblivion.esm.

-----------------------------

Here's how to get it working...this assumes that you have a 44.1kHz/16-bit/Mono WAV file ready to LIPpify:

First, extract the contents of this archive into your Oblivion\Data folder. This will place LIPTemplate.esp and also the required folders so that you don't have to create them (there will be a DELETE ME placeholder file in each subfolder... just delete them when you find them.) Keep in mind that Dark and Wood elves use the High Elf voice set, Khajiit use the Argonian voice set, Orcs use the Nord voice set, and female Bretons use the female Imperial voice set in a default Oblivion install, so those are the included folders.

Now, launch the old v1.0.303 Construction Set .EXE wherever it happens to be. Go under File->Data. Find LIPTemplate.esp in the TES Files list, double-click it so there's an "X" in its checkbox, click Set As Active File and then OK and it will load.

Once loaded, open the dialogue editor by clicking the "speech balloon" icon at the top. You'll notice ten "Dialog 1" to "Dialog 10" entries. I put ten of them in case there's lots of dialog to do, but we'll just do one for now.

Double-click "Dialog 1" and it will open. First, change the Response Text from "Dialog 1" to what the NPC is actually saying in the voice file. The text needs to match to synch up properly. Then set the Emotion Type and Emotion Value fields appropriately.

Now copy your WAV file to the correct folder. Let's assume the voice is an Argonian male. The folder to place the file in is Data -> Sound -> Voice -> LIPTemplate.esp -> Argonian -> M. As indicated, you'll find all the required folders already there if the LIPTemplate archive was extracted properly.

Now drag over the Voice Filename "Dialog_GREETING_00000803_1" and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. Find your WAV file, rename it, Ctrl+V to paste the filename and make sure it keeps the ".wav" extension.

Once the file's placed and renamed, click OK to exit the Edit Response dialog and then double-click your line of dialogue again to reopen it. This has to be done so that it picks up the new file in the right location.

Now click on the Argonian M row and you should see the "Generate Lip File:" button go out of grayed-out. Click it and you should see your new LIP file appear in the right folder.

If you copied the WAV file into the folder it's no longer required now and can be deleted. Find the original file, rename/copy the name with Ctrl+C and rename the new LIP file pasting the name in and keeping the .LIP extension, then move it into the correct folder where yor original WAV file for your mod is, ie Data -> Sound -> Voice -> MoyMod.esp -> Argonian -> M. That's it!

Once you're done generating, quit the Construction Set with File -> Exit and choose "No" to saving the plugin.

I definitely went through all of that already. Exactly 122 times, in fact. Problem is, I can't make .wav files to fit those specifications. Audacity won't save to those parameters, not in the version for Windows 7 in any case. I made a ton of lip files, but they looked all kinds of jacked in-game. Hence, the request for filler lip files. I'm already grabbing lip files in the lengths I need from the game folders, but the idea was so that this wouldn't have to happen again in the future.

Well, what do you think would be a good resource? I don't tend to make dialog so I'm not one to set any kind of example...hehehe.

0.5 seconds

1.0 seconds

1.5 seconds

2.0 seconds

2.5 seconds

4.0 seconds

4.5 seconds

5.0 seconds

5.5 seconds

6.0 seconds

...

14.0 seconds

14.5 seconds

15.0 seconds

Would these be sufficient for most scenarios, not enough...too much...not small enough intervals?

Oh, score! Thank you so much for considering it. =D I'd like my companion to at least look like she's saying her lines, even if her lips are just going 'blah blah blah.'

The longest dialogue I've made my companion modding is 12 seconds long. I've looked at companions Saerileth's and Neeshka's files a lot too, and I think Saerileth's dialogue files hit 15 seconds once. Maybe really lengthy quest modders who write out dramatic plot-lines would need longer, but Oblivion just won't allow NPCs to say more than two or three lines of dialogue at a time. 15 seconds should be plenty enough time for a solid resource.

So, I would propose making lip files in second or half-second increments up to 15 seconds long. Either just 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds, etc. or .5 seconds,1 second, 1.5 seconds, 2 seconds, etc. The latter of the two would be much better for accuracy of course, but that's 30 files (!) and I don't want to strain your good graces.

whoa there...I wasn't volunteering...just trying to get clarification on what is wanted...which helps you and whoever can take up this request. It is best to write out what you want in the 1st post...such as writing out the second intervals just like I did...but spelled out the entire way so there is no confusion as to what is being asked.

I assume you could create all the silenced .wav files by taking existing .wav files and slicing and dicing and concatenating. That would save some work for whoever is willing to create the lip files. Maybe not with audacity but maybe something like Windows Recorder, Wavpad, AVS Audio Editor, Expression Encoder or Sound Forge?

Oh, sorry to misunderstand there! I got my hopes up is all.

Thank you for the help clarifying, though. Of course I'd make whatever I could to help out, but my current .wav files don't work for Oblivion. Although, I haven't looked at some of that software; I'll check it out.
