Daggers In Oblivion

Is there any situation where i would use a dagger over say a longsword in this game? I.e. do I deal extra damage with a dagger in sneak mode than i would then say if i had a longsword? If so, what is the modifier difference? Thanks!

There's no good reason to use a dagger over a longsword. Both have exactly the same sneak modifier. The dagger hits faster, but its terrible reach and generally poor attack ratings make that a fairly minor advantage.

The dagger may be useful for enchantment-based fighting, but there's little call for that in basic Oblivion - the longsword's reach is handier than a higher blast-rate on enchantments.

what i think would be cool to do with the daggers is to instead of using them the way their being used is to have it so you can leave the blade lodged between some ribs. say if the guy that just got stabbed doesn't have a weapon he could pull out the blade and fight with it but it would cost him some life. just like the real life scenerio when someone gets stabbed if they pull out the blade they have an increased chance of death. this could be done maybe by applying dagger meshes and textures to an arrow that is not dependant on the bow to attack. actually i have no clue on how this could be achieved.

i think that if someone who was skilled at modding in oblivion they could possibly make a mod that makes the short-blade back to it's original cool. personally i think that the way that they are is like morrowind, but i think that if they were to be improved then it would have to be something that we have not seen before. something like being able to break your blade off in someones body and then recover the broken blade after you kill them would be awesome. whilst the damage caused from the dagger would be semi-permenent affect but small something like combat damage + 1pt damage health for 200secs you could also throgh other effects in to the mix to simulate a fatal injury. this could possibly be finished off by adding a poison apple affect(drama purposes). but thing that i think is carzy is, if someone is willing to go through all of this trouble to get a cool dagger. then just think of the possibilities if the same modder spent the time on the long sword.(decap, and several severed limbs to pick up and beat people over the head with.(severed nord arm)(morrowind)

Daggers are useless? I was under the impression that the larger weapons in a class (claymore, warhammer, etc.) Had a greater chance of knockback and disarm, while smaller weapons (i.e. dagger, shortsword) had a better chance of inflicting paralysis, but hand-to-hand, to make up for its short reach and low damage, had the highest chance for disarm, knockback, and paralysis out of any weapon. If this isn't true, this would definately be a good way to make other weapons viable alternatives without making damage and reach changes.

all the weapons hav strengths and weaknesses. so to me they are all equal. what the dagger lacks in size it makes up for in chance to immobilize ur opponent and in sneak damage. what the claymore and warhammer lack in speed they make up for in damage. etc. so technically there is no better weapon. :D

What i think would be easy to implement and should be done is this -

daggers get really high damage multiplier when in sneak.

You should be able to hold a dagger upside down to stab like an assassin would.

I mean the whole point of being an assassin is so you can stab someone in the back or at least something like that. it sucks that i still have to beat someone with a sword a couple of times even though assassins are supposed to be quiet.

I also have a question that's offtopic, but does anyone know of a mod that prevents guards from somehow knowing that you have looted items? I understand being busted after being caught stealing, however how the heck do that guards know that i looted gold off an already dead ally? I tried "no psychic guards" but that only prevents them from coming when i murder someone.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

No assassin would use a dagger in the classic overarm stabbing motion you see in the movies. The shoulderblades, ribcage and skull are too thick for an attack coming from above to cause fatal damage instantly. Daggers tend to be used to thrust up through the stomach area.

The Navy SEALS use combat knives upside down but that is because using it that way allows for better control of a short slashing weapon. A 'standard' grip is better for stabbing.

That's not exactly true. Some weapons are much weaker than others. Blunts and blades as classes are roughly equal, but a high-level longsword or katana is going to cause more damage and allow greater defence than almost anything else.

no, a dagger has no real advantage over a longsword, other than it being lighter and taking less fatigue to swing. Indeed, a longsword is much better for sneak attacks since the longsword's inherent damage advantage over the dagger is magnified even further by a sneak attack bonus.

Well, it looks a lot cooler, and it IS a fantasy game...I would like it. To be honest, I expected it in the game...
