New Install Freezing

Hi I'm having problems with a new install of Oblivion ( no updates or mods completely uninstalled and registry cleaned before reinstalling ) in Vista.

Basically I do a fresh install of Oblivion and when I go to start the game it all loads up fine then when i click "new" for a new game at the menu it locks up at that point. I have tried reinstalling more than five times with all sorts of combinations ( vanilla install, vanilla with 1 update, 2 updates 3 updates etc ) but still no joy always the same problem, everytime :wallbash: . Its driving me banana's :whistling: . I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and knows how I can fix this. My computer is a Packard Bell IXtreme Intel Repentium IV dual 3.4GHz with 3 gigs of ram ATI x300 256mb Vidcard unfortunately running Vista. Thanks in advance for your miracle cure that'll save my sanity. :woot: haha loving these emoticons.

Try uninstalling Oblivion and reinstall it outside of the Program Files folder -- Oblivion has issues when installed in Vista/Win7's protected 'Program Files' folder structure. I generally install mine to C:\Games\Oblivion .

Go here to see if your computer can run the game

http://www.systemreq...referrer/srtest

You will find Oblivion listed as 'The Elder Scrolls IV, Oblivion

Fallout3 as Fallout3 PC and Dragon Age listed as Dragon age

It may also help if we know what version you have.

ie Game of the Year version, DVD or Steam (or whatever)

Do you have the latest patches? Do you have Shivering Isles?

Note: If you do have Shivering Isles, DO NOT patch with the Oblivion only patch. Install both Oblivion and Shivering Isles, then use ONLY the Shivering Isles patch.

Hi Hickory thanks for your reply. I probably should've mentioned I tried installing to two different external drives and haven't ever installed it into the " Program Files" folder.

External hard drives are much slower than most internal hard drives and may not perform well enough to be usable for this. As a test, try running oblivion and when it "freezes", go find something else to do for about 15-30 minutes or so and see if it finally gets somewhere. If it does, your drives are definitely too slow.
