what is the correct procedure for capturing souls I`ve managed to capture some but not others although I do know that the ones I can`t seem to get are valid race npc`s

As far as I am concerned, I don't start Arena battles before this quest. Finish another 10 Daedra Lords, take the spell from Mora, enter Arena and cast spell to each combatant. There are combatants of all races, you can't 'avoid' any of them. :)

like BlackerrR said your best shot is the arena other than that i used to travel from bandit camp to bandit camp just make sure to only shot the soul trap spell at one enemy at a time or you run the risk of not traping anything (if you hit something you already captured just kill it and go for the next one)

other choice is to go to other shrines and kill the people in there

and before starting the quest make a save, THE QUEST IS GLITCHED and sometimes the game stops registering the souls (if you are using the unofficial patch i think they fixed this, but not sure)

and finally you need to capture 1 soul of every vanilla race and thats tricky becouse in the heath of battle sometimes you cant know what race is the enemy npc so go one by one-- soul trap, kill and repeat the same with the next enemy--

Looking at the entrance to the arena head into it and enter the door to your left, following the path until you find a redguard named Owyn. Talk to him to start the quest line.

 

The arena itself is the district between the Market District and the Arboretum In the Imperial City.
