well with what some other people have mentioned could it also affect what types of things people say to you as you pass them? for example the "welcome friend you're nearly a legend around here."

I'm inclined to think that it's the combination of reputation and personality that has the most to with how unaffiliated people like you or don't.

its kinda obvious but i want to make it clear. i havent gotten far in my rep especially cuz i restarted.. but i had a rep of 6 or so and alot of people liked me. when you have 0 or 1 about.. they are all like what is it outlander and just outcast me from society when i did nothign yet. quests for people, doing good and all that helps rep i know this. i free slaves when i get the chance and i do alot of the free quests that are purely for filling the journal or having something to do. my friend got to like level 38 and still had a reputaion of 0 to 2 somewhere in there because they never do quests other than the essential ones to get somewhere like the dark brotherhood investigation to be able to reach mournhold or the latest rumor is that theres a khuul ship to solstheim. but thats expansions.. ne ways.. my bud does snipe with his daedric bow and wit hhis cheating he kills alot of people and thus he has 0 rep cuz hes not nice to npc's whereas i am nice.. sometimes. so i dont know if ill ever get to 50 rep but when i do ill be more popular then vivec or almalexia. ha ha

It is as far as i can tell, not sure how it calculates it exactly, but have personality 100 and a rep of about 110 and most dispositions are at 100.

The best way to get rep is to do the main MW quest as you get loads for that. There are a few misc/guild quests that give rep, and some of the expansion ones, but not that many (prob total 20 rep). The big rep raises are the later missions in the main qeust

Does freeing slaves and doing random things like that improve your rep?

I went round being a good guy but i'm not sure if it did anything other than giving me some useless loot. What about killing the Dagoth guys that are not in Mt Wossname. I found a cave near Balmora-Peligraid and killed him, would that do anything?

PS: Not newbie, just out of practice :(

Hmmm, the freeing slaves-alters reputation query is an interesting one, I'm not sure if it effects you rep, I doubt it.

Destroying Dagoth-ur and his minions definitely gives you a boost in your popularity.

...Reputation is only given after certain quests. If you free just so many slaves and talk to Jobasha, you may get a reputation increase. Aside from the main quest, you can get the largest reputation increase from the Great Houses. Even if you just happen to run across a Hlaalu or Telvanni quest while you're a Redoran, you will still get the reputation increase if you're able to complete the quest.

Killing the Ash Vampires will give you no reputation increase, nor will venturing into Dagoth Ur, unless you're doing it as part of the main quest. If you want to be a nice guy and still get the reputation increases, you should download Freelancer and Juniper's Twin Lamps.

Thanks for clearing that up Marxist, so if go and destroy dagoth on my own accord (I dont want the title of nerevarine) I won't receive a reputation boost?

Suits me anyway, wasn't interested in becoming a dark elf idol.
