zany chimp
My graphics card is a GeForce 6200. It's barely done the job for Oblivion, and i am looking for a new one. I seem to remember hearing something about different graphics card slot types or something... will Nvidia's newer graphics cards work with my motherboard? JimboUK
The old type is AGP, newer cards are PCI-e. It might be worth posting your specs, including motherboard and power supply.
zany chimp
I don't know what type my motherboard is, or how to find out. My power supply... i don't feel like taking apart my computer right now, but to give you an idea, i had to disconnect my floppy drive so there would be enough power for the monitor. JimboUK
That doesn't sound too promising, modern cards will draw a lot more power than the one you're using so the power supply may need replacing as well. You should be able to use this to find out your motherboard... http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html Edit: Your monitor should have it's own supply, is that a laptop? zany chimp
I just realized something... it wasn't the monitor that the power was needed in, but the graphics card. no graphics card = blank monitor! I used the EVEREST thing and it says I have 1 AGP slot and 3 PCI slots. Is PCI-e any different than PCI?

You'll have to find an AGP card, which rules out the latest ones. We still need to know what your power supply is because without knowing that people can't really recommend a card. zany chimp
I'm guessing this is some indication of my power supply... there's a red switch on the back with two numbers on it: 110 and 230. it has something to do with the power, and when i flip it to 110 my computer doesn't work. That's the voltage, isn't it?

That's the voltage, isn't it? Yeah leave that on 230v. It'll be written on the supply itself, it will be in Watts or W, if you can't find that then the make and model should be on there somewhere. You might as well have a look in there, you'll need to open it to put a new card in anyway, just unplug it first and avoid touching the boards with your fingers. zany chimp
opened it up and it says 350 Watts. I am not looking to upgrade to the latest graphics card right now, just the next step up from this. Would a GeForce 7 or 8 series be out of the question? Would a GeForce 7 or 8 series be out of the question? I think the last AGP card from Nvidia was the 7800 and that needs 400w apparently. The 6800 Ultra should be OK with that supply, I've seen comments from people running them OK on a 350w. do check you have the connectors required. The last AGP card I had was a ATI x1650pro and according to ATI that'll run off a 350 as well. Any of those will leave the 6200 in the dust but you will still need to turn the graphics down. The cards themselves might not be that easy to get hold of, it might be worth putting that money towards a serious upgrade instead.
