SourceUp
Naa guys i am playing Skyrim at 1080p, Ultra settings no mods. I tried stock clocks for the cpu but still the same. Other game work great, i am play Assassins Creed Unity on Ultra at 60fps. So i am sure its not hardware related.
SourceUp
Ok, I got it. As far as I can see from your signature you play on 4k monitor.4k is 8847360 pixels to calculate at once vs 1080p's 2073600 pixels. It seems like you just lack horse powers to play @ 4k. Test Skyrim @ 1080p and tell us about the results. P.S. And if you really do play @ 4k this is 100% the case. 4k is unreachable goal for current gpus. I play games like shadow of mordor at 4k and i get great fps, so i am sure something is not right with skyrim
Thrizon
I gotta bump this thread. I'm currently speaking with a friend via Skype who has gotten a new rig with an Inte i7 4790k CPU, a MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G and 8 Gigs of Ram. Skyrim seems to be running fine for him until he gets near Whiterun and out in the Tundra. His FPS will go from a solid 60 fps to 3 fps.(This is with an ENB installed btw)If we remove the ENB his frames will go up again. But even without an ENB and without mods he would experience frame drops from 60 to 20-30-ish. Again around Whiterun and in the Tundra. A funny thing though:With the ENB enabled and mods installed... If he saves his game near Whiterun and the Tundra, restarts Skyrim and loads the game up from that particular save file, everything will run at a solid 60 fps again. Now I don't know if it has anything to do with the OP's post. I've been looking everywhere for a fix or solution but have found nothing so far. I just presume that the fault lies with the GTX 980 somewhere. Best of wishes to one and all. EDIT: Problem ''solved''. Seems the install order was not correct after all. His game is now running fluidly again. Edited December 16, 2014 by Thrizon

jones177
Vanilla Skyrim will run at 140fps at 1080 & 84fps at 4k outside with your card. It will run at over 60fps with ENB plus 250 mods & 2k textures at 1080 & 45fps average at 1440.The frame rate hits you are taking are CPU & are caused by poor design. At the top of the stairs to Dragonreach looking out on to Whiterun my frame rate is exactly the same with a 680, 970 sc,980 sc & 980 ti sc. I ran all these cards with the same CPU.The hit is the same at 1080, 1440 & 4k.Skyrim is a CPU game. Only with ENB dose it become a GPU game. No use even trying...its a waste of resources. And ENB is NOT the be-all-answer to performance, still takes some user time to find a balance. CPU time is eaten up by slow papyrus cycles. Mods that add scripts that run on NPCs will cause the most severe drops...because the cycle causes wait times; if the waits are interrupted, causes stacks; stacks cause all kinds of hell. I've just done some interesting tweaks and concluded that maybe some help can be had for papyrus cycles, but I'm gonna play out some time in game before publishing my experiments. If you have Convenient Horses or Frostfall...run the latency test. If you can't get 33-37 avg, with default papyrus settings, then remove some mods that are script intense. Sorielle
Hi, I have now been modding for a while. I cannot say I am an expert but I have tested countless things. After a long learning period I have finally managed to get a "solid" skyrim with something like 180 mods. Here comes the BUT... For some reason, after playing for a certain period of time the FPS count starts dropping little by little. I process a clean save and then use a save cleaner to clean references. I then move on to making sure my load order is right, go over the TESV edits, etc... but nothing works. Every time I have to do a clean install of skyrim. Luckily I just need to re-enable all my mods. But what a pain this is..... I too have fairly good hardware and it looks like Skyrim just looses it after some time. Even a Skyrim without mods go nuts after a while and Saves is the perfect example. If anyone got some good advice I'll take it!
BlackRoseOfThorns
It's not normal for gtx 980 to go as low as 20fps without enb + texture overhauls (140-170fps for gtx 780 @1080p outside Riverwood). However the cpu dependency is Skyrims biggest bottleneck. Even if you have 8 cores only 2 of them are properly utilized. You might want to seek out other amd cpu owners and compare the results vs intel i7/i5. For now try lowering primary and secondary shadow resolution and distance in your ini. Set particle density (it's mainly for fog and smoke) to something in between 250-750. Also mods like Performance PLUS disabling falling leaves and dandelions animation help a ton.
